UN Secretary-General Urges AI Firms to Disclose Environmental Costs, Power with Renewables by 2030

UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched the AI Environmental Transparency Initiative on June 23 during London Climate Action Week, demanding that AI companies publicly disclose the carbon, water, and land costs of their data centers. "If AI is to help build a better future, it must be honest about what it costs us now," Guterres said, according to The Straits Times.
The push is backed by a landmark report from the UN University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, which projects that by 2030, AI data centers could consume 945 terawatt-hours of electricity per year — nearly triple the combined current use of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria, Crypto Briefing reported.
The UNU-INWEH report lays out four alarming numbers. Water use from AI data centers could hit 9.3 trillion liters per year by 2030 — enough to cover the basic annual water needs of 1.3 billion people. The land footprint for AI infrastructure could exceed 14,500 square kilometers, roughly twice the size of Jakarta, according to The Next Web.
On top of that, AI infrastructure could generate 2.5 million tonnes of electronic waste annually by 2030. "The public debate still often treats AI as software, but AI is also physical infrastructure: data centers, cooling systems... and water," said Kaveh Madani, Director of UNU-INWEH, as cited by AJC.
The strain is not just a future problem. Ireland offers a sharp warning: by 2023, data centers already consumed 21% of the country's total metered electricity — more than all urban households combined, Crypto Briefing reported. Guterres warned that data centers could soon rank among the largest electricity users on the planet, exceeding all but a handful of countries.
The problem is also highly concentrated. Ninety percent of specialized AI computing sits in just two countries, according to UNU-INWEH. Communities near data centers bear the environmental costs — drained water supplies, cleared land — while the economic benefits flow elsewhere, the report found, as Head Topics noted.
The UN is calling for all AI data centers to run on 100% renewable energy by 2030. But some major tech firms are moving in the opposite direction. Google and Microsoft have been turning to fossil gas and nuclear power to meet surging demand, despite their net-zero pledges, The Next Web reported.
Critics also warn that "low-carbon" does not mean "low-impact." Switching from coal to bioenergy can cut carbon by 70% but increase water use 30-fold and land use 100-fold. A February report by NGO Beyond Fossil Fuels called 74% of industry claims about AI's climate benefits unproven, labeling them a "hoax," according to News.com.au.
The initiative is not just a call for data. The UN is pushing a "Responsible AI Ecosystem" built on six principles: transparency, efficiency by design, equity, lifecycle responsibility, global cooperation, and sustainable use, Crypto Briefing reported. The framework signals a shift away from voluntary corporate pledges toward coordinated international standards.
A first Global Dialogue on AI Governance is scheduled for July 6–7 in Geneva, where countries will discuss how to put these standards into practice. Resource conflicts are already forcing the issue. Cities like Querétaro in Mexico and Montevideo in Uruguay have faced water scarcity crises directly tied to data center demand, according to AJC.
