Iran Files Formal U.N. Complaint Over U.S. Restrictions On Airlines

Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization has filed a formal protest with the U.N.’s International Civil Aviation Organization over U.S. restrictions on Iranian airlines, calling them illegal and saying they infringe on the aviation industry’s rights. Its chief, Abouzar Shiroudi, said Iran is coordinating with the Foreign Ministry and pursuing legal and diplomatic channels to restore routes that were previously operating. The complaint follows U.S. measures targeting Iranian airlines and aviation services; Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that carriers could lose access to services such as fuel and ground handling. Iran has used connecting flights through regional hubs, including Istanbul, as an alternative to some suspended direct routes.
Washington said Iranian aviation networks had been used to smuggle military personnel, arms and other sanctioned material.
Earlier in September, the United States took action against dozens of firms linked to Iranian airlines, aircraft procurement and aviation networks.
Iran’s aviation chief said restoring routes temporarily suspended because of regional and wartime conditions was a priority for the organization.
