Deadly Bus Crash in Ethiopia's Amhara Region Kills 28, Renewing Safety Concerns

Witness accounts described a “chaotic” scene as rescuers tried to reach people trapped in and around the submerged vehicle, and officials warned the death toll could change as search operations continued.
A passenger bus plunged 100 meters into a ravine in Ethiopia's Amhara region on June 14, killing at least 31 people and injuring dozens more, according to Al Jazeera. The bus was traveling from Dessie to the capital, Addis Ababa, when the driver lost control on a steep, winding stretch of road in the North Shewa Zone.
Regional police confirmed the crash in a statement posted to Facebook by the Amhara Media Corporation. Images released by authorities showed the wreckage scattered across a sharp hillside. Officials warned the death toll could rise as search operations continued.
The bus departed Dessie at around 6:30 AM and crashed roughly five hours later, Al Jazeera reported. It veered off the asphalt and broke through guardrails before tumbling into the ravine. The vehicle rolled multiple times before coming to rest at the bottom of the gorge.
Local farmers and residents were first on the scene. One witness told local media: "The scene was chaotic. We were trying to pull people from a vehicle that was crushed like a tin can." Emergency crews with extraction equipment arrived roughly two hours after the crash. Survivors were taken to nearby hospitals.
Mirror and other outlets described the bus as overcrowded at the time of the crash. Independent local media reported the bus may have been illegally overloaded — a common practice that officials often overlook at checkpoints. Authorities have not confirmed the exact number of passengers on board.
Amhara Regional Police said they are investigating whether mechanical failure or driver fatigue caused the crash. A spokesperson said: "We are currently investigating whether mechanical failure or driver fatigue was the primary catalyst for this tragedy." Survivor accounts, however, point to high-speed driving to make up time lost at security checkpoints.
Ethiopia records more than 4,500 road deaths per year, according to the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport. The World Health Organization links the toll to aging vehicle fleets, poor driver training, and weak enforcement of passenger limits on inter-city buses. The Dessie-to-Addis Ababa route is considered one of the most dangerous in the country, Al Jazeera noted.
Transport analyst Dr. Samuel Bekele told Al Jazeera that "the maintenance of safety infrastructure like guardrails and reflectors has not kept pace with the volume of traffic." He added that the Dessie-Addis route has become "a bottleneck where speed and safety are constantly at odds."
This crash follows a deadly year on Ethiopian roads in 2024. In December, a truck carrying wedding guests plunged into a river in the Sidama region, killing at least 71 people. Earlier in 2024, a bus swerved into a river on the southern Wolaita route, killing 28 people and seriously injuring 19 others.
The Ethiopian Ministry of Transport has a Road Safety Strategy covering 2025 to 2030. A department statement said the Amhara crash "underscores the urgent need" for that strategy "to be implemented with greater vigor in mountainous regions." Authorities have also proposed GPS tracking for all commercial buses to monitor speed and rest stops.
