Microsoft's Project Solara Platform Shifts Computing to AI Agents on Android Devices
Microsoft at Build 2026 unveiled Project Solara, a chip-to-cloud platform meant to power an “agent-first” device ecosystem, shifting the next computing platform from apps to AI agents that act with context. The platform is built on Android (not Windows) to support lower-power hardware while still providing management and security features expected by IT, and it is designed to let organizations bring their own agents. Microsoft demonstrated two reference device concepts: a desk hub that can sign users in via facial recognition and surface pressing tasks, with a monitor attachment that can function like a cloud-based Windows machine, and a wearable badge for on-the-go interactions that can capture and transcribe conversation and use its camera for agent “point of view.” Solara is structured around enterprise readiness (privacy, security, control, and trust), an agent-driven interaction model with just-in-time interfaces, and extensibility for developers and institutions. Qualcomm and MediaTek are the initial silicon partners behind the reference hardware, and Microsoft says the concept devices are not products but designs others can build into real offerings. Microsoft also positioned Solara as part of a broader race against companies such as Google, Amazon, and OpenAI to establish the backbone for the next wave of AI gadgets, with initial pilots planned by organizations including AccuWeather, Best Buy, CVS Health, and Target.
