Sam Darnold returns from injury to start for Seahawks against Commanders

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold has recovered from a glute injury and is set to start Sunday against the Washington Commanders after returning to full practice. Drew Lock, who guided Seattle to a 2-0 start while Darnold was sidelined, will return to the bench. The Seahawks will be without starting safeties Julian Love and Ty Okada, with AJ Finley and Rodney Thomas II expected to fill in. Washington is also missing its starting quarterback, Jayden Daniels, and is expected to start Marcus Mariota; the news has helped make Seattle a 7.5-point favorite.
While Darnold was out, Drew Lock completed 72.9% of his passes for 422 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
Darnold said he briefly feared his glute injury might end his season or affect his career while he waited for test results; the team initially described it as a “very unique, soft-tissue injury” to the hip.
Seattle defensive tackle Brandon Pili was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game because of a concussion.
In the first two games, Seattle’s defense allowed only 17 points, while the offense scored 44 with Darnold sidelined.
