Fallout 4 has sold more than 35 million copies to date, underscoring the franchise’s enduring commercial strength alongside upcoming remasters and new titles.
Creators have earned more than $10 million in royalties from Creations, reflecting Bethesda’s ongoing emphasis on user-generated content and creator-driven monetization.
Bethesda Game Studios has confirmed that Fallout 5 is in pre-production, ending months of speculation about the franchise's future. The studio also revealed that remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in the works, and that Obsidian Entertainment is building a separate Fallout game — meaning four Fallout projects are now active at once, according to Rock Paper Shotgun.
The announcements came in a studio update following sweeping Xbox layoffs that hit around 3,200 workers. Todd Howard stressed that Fallout is a top priority and that multiple teams are moving the franchise forward at the same time, per VGChartz.
Bethesda laid out a broad Fallout roadmap that covers both near-term and long-term releases. Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remasters are in progress. Obsidian — which made the beloved New Vegas — is building its own new Fallout game. And Fallout 5 sits at the far end of the timeline as the long-range destination, Rock Paper Shotgun reported.
Fallout 76 is also getting major new content. A big expansion called Raven Rock arrives in 2027. It will serve as a prequel to Fallout 3. Bethesda is also planning a Fallout Day celebration in 2027 to mark the franchise's 30th anniversary, according to Gamer Matters.
The Elder Scrolls VI remains in active development and is Bethesda's primary focus ahead of Fallout 5, Tweaktown noted. Both games will run on Creation Engine 3, the studio's next-generation engine. Bethesda described the tech pipeline as shared, meaning work on one game feeds directly into the other.
The update arrives after Xbox's sweeping reset, which includes about 3,200 layoffs over the next year. Id Software and Obsidian are among the studios hit hard by cuts. Despite the turbulence, Howard framed the studio update as a sign that development continues at full pace, per Tech4Gamers.
The scope of Bethesda's Fallout push is backed by strong numbers. Fallout 4 has sold more than 35 million copies. Fallout Shelter has reached 250 million players. Amazon's Fallout TV series is already in Season 3 production, and Bethesda is developing an unscripted Fallout Shelter show with Amazon Studios and Kilter Films, according to VGChartz.
Bethesda's Creations platform — which lets players add their own content to games — is also growing fast. More than 40% of Starfield players use Creations. Game creators have earned over $10 million in royalties so far. Bethesda says it plans Starborn content for Starfield next year, Gamer Matters reported.
