Rapidly Expanding Invasive Caimans Threaten Florida's Everglades Restoration; Researchers Seek Public Help

Invasive spectacled caimans are spreading fast across the Florida Everglades, and researchers say the reptiles could undermine a $21 billion restoration effort. University of Florida scientists have launched a public call to action, asking residents to report sightings through the IVEGOT1 app to help map how far the invasion has spread.
The spectacled caiman, originally from Central and South America, has lived in South Florida since the 1960s. But recent sightings suggest the species has moved roughly 40 miles west from its original range in Miami-Dade County canals — pushing deep into the Everglades, according to UF mapping data.
Spectacled caimans first arrived in Florida through the pet trade in the 1960s and 1970s. For decades, biologists thought they were stuck in the man-made canal systems of southern Miami-Dade County. Small and harder to spot than alligators — adults range from 5 to 8 feet long — they drew little alarm compared to Burmese pythons, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
That assumption is now being challenged. Between 2022 and 2024, researchers saw a sharp rise in sightings farther west and north. Reports of unidentified crocodilians in West Palm Beach and Collier County areas rose 15% in the past 12 months alone, according to EDDMapS IVEGOT1 data. The FWC currently removes hundreds of caimans per year, but experts say that is only a fraction of the true population.
The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan aims to bring back natural water flow across the landscape. But the canals and culverts built to move that water are also giving caimans a path into new territory. As water quality improves and bird populations return, caimans follow the food, according to the Everglades Foundation.
UF wildlife biologist Sidney Godfrey put it plainly. "If we're going to spend billions of dollars on restoration, we need to ensure that the species we're trying to protect aren't being pushed out by those that don't belong here," he said. Caimans pose what researchers call a "double threat" — they eat the same prey as native wading birds and are large enough to eat the birds themselves.
One major obstacle is identification. Most South Florida residents cannot tell a caiman apart from a native alligator. That confusion has let the species grow quietly for years without triggering the same public outcry seen with pythons. UF researchers say this "identity error" has given caimans time to establish firm breeding populations before anyone sounded the alarm.
Unlike alligators, which struggle during dry seasons, caimans may be more resilient to the Everglades' shifting water levels. That adaptability worries scientists. If caimans outcompete juvenile alligators in key habitats, they could thin the next generation of Florida's native apex predator, according to National Park Service researchers tracking species in Everglades National Park.
University of Florida researchers plan to tag caimans with tracking devices to study their movements. They will also use environmental DNA tools — which detect animal traces left in water — to find populations that have not yet been spotted by human eyes, according to UF/IFAS. The data will help officials decide whether a containment strategy or full-scale removal effort is needed.
The public can help right now. Anyone who spots a caiman — or any crocodilian they cannot identify — can report it through the free IVEGOT1 app. Palm Beach Post reports that UF has specifically asked South Florida residents to submit photos and location data. The next six months of data, researchers say, will be critical in determining how deep the invasion has already gone.
