Commerce Finalizes $100 Million Quantinuum CHIPS Award

Quantinuum was the only company with a trapped-ion architecture to receive CHIPS Research and Development funding, according to the company and the Commerce Department announcement.
Quantinuum said it relies on established semiconductor manufacturing processes to improve the reliability, repeatability and scalability of its current and future quantum computers.
Quantinuum President and CEO Rajeeb Hazra called the award “a validation of Quantinuum’s leadership in trapped-ion quantum computing” and said the domestic partnerships would help strengthen U.S. leadership in the field.
Quantinuum’s shares rose 2.9%, or $1.43, to $7.09 after the funding agreement was announced.
Quantinuum secured $100 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act to advance trapped-ion quantum computing and domestic semiconductor manufacturing, according to The Quantum Insider. The company is the only trapped-ion architecture firm to receive CHIPS Research and Development funding. Quantinuum's stock jumped 2.9% to $7.09 after the announcement.
The program targets critical bottlenecks in quantum hardware: next-generation ion traps, cryogenic electronics, integrated photonics, and optical components needed to scale fault-tolerant quantum computers, according to Interesting Engineering. Quantinuum will partner with GlobalFoundries and Monarch Quantum to strengthen the domestic supply chain.
Trapped-ion systems represent a leading approach to building reliable quantum computers. Together, the three companies aim to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign quantum hardware suppliers.
