Ninja Theory Unveils Senua: Next Hellblade Title Prioritizes Player Agency, Varied Combat

Ninja Theory officially revealed Senua, a new action-adventure installment in the Hellblade series, set after the events of Senua’s Saga Hellblade 2 and launching in 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam and Xbox Game Pass. The game follows the Celtic warrior as she’s trapped between life and death in a fractured purgatory, where she must fight through enemies and her inner turmoil to reach the afterlife and reunite with those she lost. Rather than being branded as Hellblade 3, studio head Dom Matthews says the title reflects a shift toward more player agency and a broader mix of combat, exploration, and puzzles than the more linear, experience-focused earlier entries. Gameplay changes include overhauled combat that supports multiple enemies at once, varied weapon use, stealth, and “Focus” abilities usable in both combat and exploration, alongside larger-scale boss fights. The world is described as a single interconnected space that’s about twice the size of Hellblade II’s, not an open world but with more traversal, secrets, and revisiting locations. Matthews also indicated Ninja Theory paused work on its previously announced Project Mara to concentrate the team’s resources on Senua.
In an interview on Xbox Wire, Ninja Theory head Dom Matthews said the earlier Hellblade titles (“Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” and “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2”) were “cinematically staged” and “very linear,” with critics dismissing them as “walking simulators,” which is why “Senua” shifts to a more balanced mix with focus “roughly evenly distributed between combat, exploration and puzzles.”
Matthews and the reveal also get specific about combat: Senua will fight multiple enemies at once using “special maneuvers,” with varied weapon options including “short and long axes,” “dual wielding,” and “throwing weapons.”
The studio says it’s brought the “entire team together on a single project for the first time in more than twelve years,” noting the last time that happened was with “DmC: Devil May Cry.”
Ninja Theory emphasized the release timing across platforms: “Senua” will appear on PlayStation 5 “immediately upon release,” which the article contrasts with other Xbox-focused announcements at the showcase—such as “Gears of War: E-Day” being revealed as an Xbox exclusive, and “Clockwork Revolution” not coming to PlayStation.
