Kura Sushi USA Reports 16% Q3 Revenue Growth Despite Traffic Drop, Narrows Outlook

Effective pricing was 4.5% in Kura Sushi USA's fiscal Q3, with management projecting about 4.2% pricing for the Q4 after a 1% roll-off in June.
Restaurant-level operating profit margin rose to 19.1% in Q3 (vs. 18.2% a year earlier), as labor costs improved to 30.6% of sales while COGS climbed to 30.2% of sales largely due to tariff-related headwinds.
Tariffs contributed about 200 basis points to COGS, and management noted roughly six revenue months were lost due to permitting and fire-inspection delays across multiple geographies.
The company opened seven new restaurants in the quarter and continues to target more than 20% unit growth; capital expenditure per new unit was around $2.5 million.
Quarterly revenue was $85.92 million (roughly in line with prior year growth but modestly below consensus expectations of $86.46 million), and earnings per share were $0.03; the company trimmed its full-year revenue outlook to $330.5–$331.5 million as softer traffic persisted, with shares falling in after-hours trading.
Kura Sushi USA posted fiscal third-quarter revenue of $85.9 million, a 16% jump from a year earlier, but shares fell in after-hours trading after the result narrowly missed analyst expectations of $86.46 million, according to Investing.com. Earnings came in at $0.03 per share, beating consensus estimates, painting a mixed picture for the conveyor-belt sushi chain.
Same-store sales — a key measure of how existing locations are performing — dipped 0.4%. Customer traffic fell 5.1%, though higher prices and menu mix added a 4.7% lift to offset some of that drop, according to The Motley Fool.
Kura opened seven new restaurants during the quarter and is targeting more than 20% unit growth for the year. Each new location costs about $2.5 million to build out. But delays hurt momentum — management said roughly six revenue months were lost due to permitting and fire-inspection holdups across multiple regions, according to The Globe and Mail.
Management kept its full-year 2026 revenue target in a narrow range of $330.5 million to $331.5 million, trimming it slightly to reflect softer traffic trends. The company lowered its outlook rather than withdrawing it, signaling cautious confidence in a recovery.
Cost of goods sold (COGS) — what the company spends on food and supplies — climbed to 30.2% of sales. Tariffs alone added about 200 basis points to that figure, according to Yahoo Finance. A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point, so 200 basis points equals a 2% hit.
Despite the tariff pressure, restaurant-level operating profit margin rose to 19.1%, up from 18.2% a year ago. Labor costs improved to 30.6% of sales, helping cushion the COGS hit. Management said the long-term goal remains a 20% restaurant-level operating profit margin.
Kura leaned on price increases to keep revenue growing even as foot traffic fell. Effective pricing was 4.5% in Q3. Management said that will ease to about 4.2% in Q4 after a 1% price rolloff in June, according to The Globe and Mail. That means the company will have less pricing power to lean on heading into the next quarter.
The 4.7% lift from price and mix was not enough to reverse the 5.1% traffic decline on a same-store basis. That gap — between what customers pay and how often they show up — is the central challenge Kura must close to hit its long-term profit goals.
Following the report, analysts cut their average 12-month price target for Kura Sushi stock from $75.30 to $74.10 per share, according to TradingView. Forecasts from 10 analysts range widely — from $51 to $95 per share — reflecting uncertainty about how quickly traffic can recover. The new average target still implies about 40% upside from recent trading levels.
Shares fell in after-hours trading after the revenue miss, even as the earnings beat offered some comfort. The stock's direction in the near term will likely hinge on whether management can close the gap between strong unit growth and weaker per-location traffic.
