Lyell Wealth and Other Institutions Significantly Boost iShares ETF Holdings Amidst Market Demand

Lyell’s iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) stake increase came alongside sharp moves by other institutions, including BNP Paribas Financial Markets (+11.4% to 2,133,461 shares), JPMorgan Chase & Co. (+27.2% to 1,060,048 shares), LPL Financial LLC (+145.9% to 992,799 shares), and Truist Financial Corp (+2,239.6% to 642,023 shares), plus WestEnd Advisors LLC initiating a new position valued at about $106.3 million.
For iShares iBonds Dec 2033 Term Corporate ETF (IBDY), Lyell reported a larger proportional jump than in the other iBonds maturities: it “lifted its stake…by 46.8%” to 173,645 shares, which the article says were worth $4.539 million. The ETF was also reported with a Friday opening price of $25.74 and a 52-week range of $25.42 to $26.52.
For iShares iBonds Dec 2034 Term Corporate ETF (IBDZ), Lyell’s proportional increase was especially steep—reported as “lifted its position…by 366.1%” to 82,610 shares (about $2.178 million). The article also lists other investors’ activity, including Janney Montgomery Scott LLC buying a new position valued at approximately $5.777 million, and notes IBDZ opened at $25.99 on Friday.
Equity Investment Corp’s new iShares Russell 1000 ETF (IWB) position is described not only by the share count and value, but also by its reported portfolio weight: the firm owned 0.06% of IWB as of its latest filing. The article further reports IWB opened at $403.53 on Friday and cites 50-day and 200-day moving averages of $393.71 and $380.3, respectively.
For iShares iBonds Dec 2031 Term Corporate ETF (IBDW), the article specifies that Lyell increased its stake by 16.1% in the fourth quarter to 332,277 shares, worth $7.028 million at the end of the period, while other investors included BOKF NA starting a new position valued at about $69,000 and Dearborn Partners LLC buying a new position valued at about $206,000.
Lyell Wealth Management LP quietly doubled down on biotech in the fourth quarter, growing its iShares Biotechnology ETF stake by 67.9% to 10,830 shares worth about $1.8 million, according to WatchlistNews. The move came as some of Wall Street's biggest names also piled into the same fund — including Truist Financial Corp, which exploded its own position by 2,239.6% to 642,023 shares.
The Atherton, California-based firm, which manages roughly $1.65 billion in assets, didn't stop at biotech. Lyell also expanded its bets on a series of iShares iBonds corporate bond funds — locking in exposure stretching as far out as December 2034.
The iShares Biotechnology ETF, which trades on Nasdaq under the ticker IBB, attracted a wave of institutional buying last quarter. JPMorgan Chase & Co. raised its position by 27.2% to 1,060,048 shares. LPL Financial LLC nearly tripled its stake, jumping 145.9% to 992,799 shares, according to WatchlistNews. WestEnd Advisors LLC opened a brand-new position valued at about $106.3 million.
BNP Paribas Financial Markets added 11.4%, bringing its total to 2,133,461 shares. The buying spree reflects growing confidence in biotech. The sector returned 28% in 2025 after a multi-year slump from 2021 to 2024. Analysts point to three drivers: looming drug patent expirations worth $200 billion or more by 2030, AI tools cutting R&D timelines, and a more favorable regulatory climate.
Alongside its equity moves, Lyell quietly built up a ladder of target-maturity bond funds. These are ETFs that work like individual bonds — they pay out and close on a set date, giving managers predictable cash flow. Lyell raised its stake in the iShares iBonds Dec 2031 fund by 16.1%, reaching 332,277 shares worth $7.028 million, according to Ticker Report.
The increases got steeper at longer maturities. Lyell grew its Dec 2033 fund position by 46.8% to 173,645 shares, worth about $4.539 million. Its Dec 2034 stake shot up by 366.1% to 82,610 shares — about $2.178 million — after buying 64,885 new shares in the quarter. By loading up on maturities through 2034, Lyell appears to be betting that corporate credit stays stable and interest rates remain relatively calm for the next decade.
Lyell wasn't alone in the iBonds space. BOKF NA started a new position in the Dec 2031 fund worth about $69,000. Dearborn Partners LLC added a new stake worth roughly $206,000, according to Ticker Report. In the longer-dated Dec 2034 fund, Janney Montgomery Scott LLC opened a much larger new position worth approximately $5.777 million.
Market pricing for these funds has stayed tight. The Dec 2033 ETF opened at $25.74 on Friday and has traded in a narrow 52-week range of $25.42 to $26.52. The Dec 2034 ETF opened at $25.99 with a market cap of $879.6 million. The stability signals that bond investors see limited credit risk in the near term.
Away from biotech and bonds, Equity Investment Corp made a notable new move. The firm bought 71,179 shares of the iShares Russell 1000 ETF, a fund that tracks the largest U.S. companies. The position is worth roughly $26.6 million and represents 0.06% of the fund's total shares. The ETF opened at $403.53 on Friday.
The Russell 1000 buy looks like a bet on broad U.S. economic strength. The ETF's 50-day moving average sits at $393.71, and its 200-day moving average is $380.30 — both well below the current price. Taken together with the biotech and iBonds activity, this quarter's filings point to institutions playing both offense and defense at the same time.
