Moonshot AI Targets $30B Valuation with $2B Funding Amid Rapid Growth and IPO Plans

Moonshot AI, the Beijing-based developer of the Kimi chatbot, is in talks to raise between $1 billion and $2 billion in a new round that could value the company at up to $30 billion, marking a sharp jump from its roughly $4 billion valuation in December and around $20 billion in its May financing. Investors are being drawn to Moonshot’s traction, including annual recurring revenue that more than doubled to about $200 million by April, driven by growing demand for its chatbot and large language model offerings. The company is also positioning itself competitively in China’s crowded AI market, where rivals including DeepSeek, Zhipu AI, Alibaba and MiniMax are escalating model releases and pricing—while Moonshot’s Kimi K2.6 is reported to perform strongly on coding benchmarks. Moonshot’s fundraising comes as it closes a Meituan-led round and quickly pursues a front-rank position among Chinese AI startups, potentially surpassing MiniMax in valuation even as it remains below Zhipu AI and DeepSeek. Separately, Moonshot is preparing for a possible Hong Kong IPO and is reportedly reorganizing its corporate structure to support listing requirements.
Moonshot’s latest push is part of a rapid funding sprint: it is pursuing its third financing in six months, with total fundraising over that period at about $3.9 billion after a Meituan-led round valued it at $20 billion.
The company’s Hong Kong IPO plans include a reported workaround to keep access to USD-denominated capital: Moonshot will retain access to US dollar funds through a joint-venture structure for foreign backers.
Moonshot is leaning into a broader product strategy beyond the chatbot: it recently launched “Kimi Work,” described as a general-purpose AI agent built on its latest K2.6 series models.
Moonshot’s business model and leadership background are tightly tied to its commercialization: it was founded by former Tsinghua University professor Yang Zhilin and offers tiered subscription plans for Kimi plus technology licensing for enterprise clients.
