BlueScope Steel has posted a stunning financial turnaround, with net profit after tax surging 857% to $802 million in FY2026, according to TipRanks. The Australian steelmaker also declared an interim dividend of AUD 1.35 per share, signaling a clear shift from heavy investment to rewarding shareholders.
The result was driven by stronger U.S. steel spreads, record performance in Southeast Asia, and record COLORBOND and TRUECORE despatches in Australia. TipRanks reported that underlying EBIT hit $1.27 billion, well above the prior year's depressed levels.
BlueScope has formally closed a $2.5 billion investment phase. New assets in New Zealand and Western Sydney are now ramping up, according to TipRanks. Management says the company is pivoting from building to delivering returns.
The company plans to deliver $3 per share of shareholder returns in both 2026 and 2027. It has also lifted its net debt target and fully completed a $200 million cost and productivity program. BlueScope's North American business now generates over $1 billion in profit, double last year's figure, according to The Australian Financial Review. That came after the company rejected a $14.2 billion takeover approach. The company also raised its final dividend to 65 cents per share, up from 30 cents a year ago.
Stronger U.S. steel spreads — the gap between raw material costs and finished steel prices — were the key driver. BlueScope's U.S. business benefited from favorable market conditions and tight cost control throughout the year.
Management has restructured its operating model to make the business simpler and more agile. BlueScope is now targeting at least $150 million of additional cost benefits in FY2027, TipRanks reported. The company says this will come from tighter operations across all regions.
Analysts back the plan. BlueScope carries a Buy rating with a target price of A$37.50, reflecting confidence in its earnings path and capital management strategy, according to TipRanks. The company also published a FY2026 Sustainability Data Supplement to support ESG disclosures for investors and regulators.
BlueScope released a detailed FY2026 Sustainability Data Supplement alongside its annual report. The document provides data to support its ESG reporting, TipRanks noted. It is aimed at giving investors and regulators a clearer view of the company's environmental and social performance.
The company also released guidance on non-IFRS financial measures — metrics that sit outside standard accounting rules but are used internally to judge performance. BlueScope warned that forward-looking statements carry uncertainty and may not reflect final outcomes, as TipRanks reported. These cautions are standard for listed companies but reflect the volatile nature of global steel markets.
