New Research Reveals Human Effort in Stonehenge Altar Stone's 430-Mile Epic Journey

Researchers say Stonehenge’s Altar Stone, a roughly six-tonne sandstone from northeast Scotland, reached Wiltshire after a complex journey of more than 430 miles. New analysis of the rock’s mineral grains combined with ice-sheet modeling suggests glaciers may have moved it partway during the last Ice Age, potentially as far as the Dogger Bank area in the North Sea, but they did not provide a viable pathway into southern England. Because no glacial route appears to directly connect the source region to Stonehenge, the study concludes that humans still had to haul and move the stone at least hundreds of kilometres across challenging terrain. The researchers propose staged transport that could have included overland hauling and later movement via rivers or sheltered waterways after the Mesolithic occupation in what is now submerged Doggerland. One interpretation is that rising sea levels and climate-driven migration may have influenced the decision to move the stone multiple times, implying prolonged cultural significance before it was incorporated into Stonehenge. Overall, the findings shift the debate away from a single glacier-only event toward a deliberate, multi-phase human effort informed by changing landscapes.
Researchers say they identified the Altar Stone’s “chemical fingerprint” by treating it like “grains of sand at the beach that have been squished together,” then using the “age and the chemical composition for each of those grains” to match the rock to outcrops in the Orcadian basin in north-east Scotland.
Co-lead author Dr Anthony Clarke said the evidence “points to a deliberate, carefully planned movement across a challenging and varied landscape,” rather than the stone being “carried naturally by ice.”
The study’s proposed route gets specific: after being moved by glacier from Caithness across the North Sea to Dogger Bank, the stone would have been recovered by Mesolithic people before the area flooded “around 7,000 years ago,” then transported further south by boat through sheltered waterways.
That same proposed route continues with named corridors: after travel by river, the stone could have been moved “up the Thames river system,” then carried over land and along the “Berkshire Ridgeway,” described as a prehistoric high-ground route that could have facilitated movement to Salisbury Plain.
Dr Remy Veness (Sheffield Hallam University) argues the climate-driven “audacious” decision to move the stone implies it mattered long before Stonehenge: “The altar stone must have been significant enough (for people) to be willing to move the stone at least twice,” first to prevent submergence as seas rose and then to its final Salisbury Plain resting place—and she adds it “could imply” Stonehenge construction began as a result of “climate-induced migration.”
