Anya Taylor-Joy Joins The Hunt for Gollum Cast, Set to Read Lord of the Rings Books

Kate Winslet and Leo Woodall are among the new cast additions for The Hunt for Gollum, joining the project alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and Jamie Dornan.
Seren is a character created specifically for The Hunt for Gollum and is not drawn from J.R.R. Tolkien’s published works, described as a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm.
Coverage notes Seren’s similarities to Tauriel from Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit films, with Tauriel portrayed by Evangeline Lilly, fueling fan debates about Seren’s character.
Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Lee Pace are returning to the Lord of the Rings universe for this project.
The story will focus on Aragorn during the period between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, including his search for the ring-obsessed creature.
Anya Taylor-Joy has revealed she has not yet read J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings books — but plans to start soon. The actress has been cast as Seren, a Sindar Elf, in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, according to IGN.
Taylor-Joy, 30, admitted she grew up with a "misguided idea" that fans had to pick between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, according to Perth Now. She chose Harry Potter. Now, ahead of her debut in Middle-earth, she is finally cracking open Tolkien's pages.
Seren is a brand-new character. She does not appear anywhere in Tolkien's published writing, according to IGN. The role describes her as a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil of the Woodland Realm. Taylor-Joy has already leaned into the part with humor, joking she wants her tombstone to read "Lethal Elf."
Because Seren is not in the books, Taylor-Joy won't find her character no matter how much she reads. Comic Basics notes this puts her in a unique spot — she is building a character from scratch inside one of the most detailed fictional universes ever created.
Some fans are already drawing comparisons between Seren and Tauriel, the elf played by Evangeline Lilly in Peter Jackson's Hobbit films. Tauriel was also a new character not found in Tolkien's text, according to IGN. She was created to add a strong female presence to a largely male story.
The parallel has sparked debate online. Critics of the Hobbit films often pointed to Tauriel as an example of straying too far from the source material. Seren's arrival is already stirring similar questions about how much creative invention belongs in a Tolkien adaptation.
The Hunt for Gollum is directed by Andy Serkis, best known for playing Gollum himself. The film is set in the period between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. It focuses on Aragorn's search for the ring-obsessed creature Gollum, according to Film News.
Jamie Dornan steps in to play Aragorn, replacing Viggo Mortensen from the original trilogy. Kate Winslet and Leo Woodall are also joining the project. Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Lee Pace are returning to reprise their roles in the Lord of the Rings universe, according to IGN.
Taylor-Joy's late start with the books may actually free her. She carries no deep attachment to how Seren "should" feel or sound, since the character never existed on the page. Sea IGN noted she is beginning her Middle-earth journey fresh, reading the books now as preparation for the role.
For a franchise built on intense fan loyalty, casting a lead who is only now reading Tolkien is a bold move. But with a new original character and a gap-era story, The Hunt for Gollum is already writing its own rules.
