BBC Radio 1 Undergoes Major Shake-Up, Axing Six Presenters for New Talent

Melvin Odoom and Rickie Haywood-Williams joined Radio 1 in 2019, moving from Kiss Breakfast Show, and hosted the late-night slot before switching to the mid-morning Live Lounge in 2021, marking a seven-year presence that is ending in this shake-up.
Reality-TV personalities continued to be integrated into Radio 1, with Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo joining the team to host the afternoon slot in May 2025 as part of the station's ongoing development of talent from television.
Charlie Hedges and Jeremiah Asiamah will host Radio 1's Live Lounge, with Jeremiah describing the appointment as a 'full circle moment' after listening to the Live Lounge on the way home from college in 2017, and Charlie promising a chaotic energy to the show.
Lauren Layfield will launch The Official Chart: First Look from Birmingham, described as the first Radio 1 programme of its kind to be broadcast live from the city.
GK Barry will conduct a six-week run on Radio 1 starting 10 September at 1pm, as part of a broader set of schedule moves; Mylo & Rosie will take over Weekday Early Breakfast (4am–7am), and Emil Franchi will front Weekend Breakfast.
BBC Radio 1 is axing six long-serving presenters in one of its biggest shake-ups in years. Rickie Haywood-Williams, Melvin Odoom, Dean McCullough, Nat O'Leary, James Cusack, and Swarzy will all leave the station at the end of August, according to Daily Mail.
Their replacements include social media influencers and new faces such as GK Barry, Charley Marlowe, Mylo & Rosie, and Emil Franchi. Express reports the move is part of a strategy to bring in younger, digitally native talent to front key slots across the schedule.
Rickie Haywood-Williams and Melvin Odoom are among the biggest names to go. The pair joined Radio 1 in 2019 after leaving Kiss Breakfast. They first hosted a late-night slot, then moved to the mid-morning Live Lounge in 2021. Their seven-year run at the station is now over, Yahoo News reported.
Dean McCullough, Nat O'Leary, James Cusask, and Swarzy are also out. All six presenters will finish their shows at the end of August. Daily Star noted the departures mark a clean sweep of several familiar Radio 1 voices at once.
GK Barry will kick off a six-week run on Radio 1 starting 10 September at 1pm. Mylo & Rosie will take over Weekday Early Breakfast, the 4am–7am slot. Emil Franchi will front Weekend Breakfast. All three are part of a wave of newer, online-first talent coming into the station, according to Mirror.
Charley Marlowe is also among the incoming presenters. The station is clearly leaning on names with strong social media followings to attract younger listeners. Express described the strategy as bringing in 'development talent' and new formats across early and weekend programming.
Charlie Hedges and Jeremiah Asiamah will take over Radio 1's Live Lounge. Jeremiah called the appointment a 'full circle moment.' He said he used to listen to the Live Lounge on the way home from college back in 2017. Charlie promised a 'chaotic energy' to the show, according to Yahoo News.
Lauren Layfield will launch The Official Chart: First Look from Birmingham. Daily Mail described it as the first Radio 1 programme of its kind to be broadcast live from the city. The move is part of a wider effort to spread the station's reach beyond London.
The station has also been building ties with TV reality stars. Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo joined Radio 1 in May 2025 to host the afternoon slot. Together, these changes point to a Radio 1 that is betting heavily on recognisable faces from TV and online to draw in new audiences, Mirror reported.
