Pirates Defeat Red Sox 8-3 After 2 1/2-Hour Rain Delay

The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Boston Red Sox 8-3 on Sunday after a 2½-hour rain delay at PNC Park, according to Yahoo Sports. Bryan Reynolds, Brandon Lowe, and Nick Yorke each drove in two runs to power the win.
The delay came after the sixth inning, halting any Red Sox momentum. Boston had cut the deficit with a three-run homer from Connor Wong in the fifth, but the Pirates held on to win going away, Fox Sports reported.
Reynolds, Lowe, and Yorke were the offensive stars for Pittsburgh. Each knocked in exactly two runs. Their combined six RBIs accounted for most of the Pirates' eight-run total, according to Newsday.
The Pirates built their lead before the rain came. When play resumed at 6:05 p.m. local time, Pittsburgh had enough of a cushion to close out the Red Sox. Boston finished with just three runs on the night, BDT Online reported.
Boston's only real threat came in the fifth inning. Catcher Connor Wong hit a three-run homer to pull the Red Sox within striking distance. It was the kind of swing that has fueled Boston's 28 comeback wins this season, LMT Online reported.
But the rain delay arrived before Boston could build on the momentum. When the game resumed, the Red Sox could not add to their total. The three-run inning remained their only offensive highlight of the night.
Pittsburgh has now won eight straight home series against American League opponents, according to Winnipeg Free Press. The streak dates back to July 21-23, 2025. That run of success at PNC Park shows the Pirates can handle AL competition on their home turf.
Sunday's win sealed the series against Boston. The Pirates have turned PNC Park into a tough place for AL teams to play. Winning eight straight home series against AL clubs is a sign of consistent, reliable home performance, WRAL noted.
The tarp came out after six innings of play. Fans and players waited 2½ hours for the rain to clear. Games can lose their rhythm after such a long stoppage, but the Pirates showed no signs of slowing down, according to Yahoo Sports Canada.
Play resumed at 6:05 p.m. Pittsburgh picked up right where it left off. The Red Sox, who have made a habit of late comebacks this season, could not find one here. The final score of 8-3 was never seriously in doubt after the delay ended.
