DoorDash Unveils 'Ask DoorDash' AI Assistant, Revolutionizing Food and Grocery Ordering

DoorDash said Ask DoorDash will “refine recommendations in real time” and provide “personalized explanations for why restaurants, meals or products match a user's request,” on top of conversational search.
For reservations, DoorDash plans a search that can answer requests like a user asking for “table for 2 downtown at 8PM,” across restaurants in the user’s area.
The company’s underlying platform overhaul is tied to major deals, including a $1.2 billion acquisition of restaurant-booking platform SevenRooms and nearly a $4 billion purchase of Deliveroo; CNBC also reported CFO Ravi Inukonda told investors DoorDash plans to carry out most of the 2026 spending on the tech stack overhaul, amid a difficult stock year.
In early testing, DoorDash reported more precise usage numbers: “7 in 10 customers” used Ask for recommendations (e.g., “ramen near me” and “what should I eat tonight”), while the rest of queries were “support, deals or general questions”; the Verge/Restaurant Business coverage also highlighted DoorDash’s scale, citing an estimated 800,000 menu items and groceries for the average customer.
DoorDash launched Ask DoorDash on June 11, an AI chatbot that lets users order food and groceries by typing plain requests or uploading photos. Instead of scrolling through menus, customers can say things like
Early results are striking. According to Android Headlines, AI-built grocery carts are 35% larger than traditional orders, and users build them five times faster. Seven in 10 early testers used Ask for discovery — searching phrases like
Users tap a new "Ask" button inside the app. From there, they can type a request, paste a recipe link, or upload a photo of a handwritten shopping list. The AI builds a cart automatically. Users can then edit items before checking out, according to TechCrunch.
The tool goes beyond simple search. LA Times reported that Ask can tailor suggestions to cuisine type, dietary needs, and group size. It also gives "personalized explanations" for why a restaurant or product matches a request. DoorDash says reservation booking — handling requests like "table for 2 downtown at 8PM" — is coming to more U.S. cities in the next few weeks.
Co-founder Andy Fang said the tool is already changing how people discover places to eat. "We're seeing customers trying out new restaurants much more frequently," he said. He added that nearly half of all takeout orders placed through Ask came from a restaurant the customer had never ordered from before.
That discovery effect matters for DoorDash's business. The platform lists an estimated 800,000 menu items, according to LA Times. Traditional browsing buries many smaller merchants. If the AI surfaces them more often, it could boost order volume — and make the case to restaurants that DoorDash is more than a delivery app.
Ask DoorDash did not arrive in a vacuum. The company spent $5.1 billion on two major acquisitions: $3.9 billion for UK-based Deliveroo and $1.2 billion for restaurant-booking platform SevenRooms. Both deals closed in 2025. Together, they gave DoorDash a presence in 40+ countries and tools to manage in-restaurant reservations — capabilities that feed directly into the AI assistant.
CFO Ravi Inukonda told investors that most of the 2026 budget is going toward a tech stack overhaul — unifying DoorDash, Wolt, and Deliveroo onto one platform. He said the work is already producing "velocity and quality benefits." But the spending has weighed on the stock. DASH is down 33% year-to-date and roughly 47% from its 52-week high of $285.50, according to GuruFocus.
DoorDash is not alone in this push. Uber launched its own "Cart Assistant" in February 2026, targeting grocery orders with recipe-based basket building. Instacart has also moved fast on AI agents. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi summed up the industry's direction plainly, saying that for AI, "the UI is whatever the user wants that UI to be."
Analysts see DoorDash transitioning from a delivery app into what some call a "local commerce operating system." But skeptics note the risk. Integrating two major acquisitions while launching a generative AI interface is complex. With 33 analysts holding a consensus "Buy" rating and a price target near $260 — versus a current price of roughly $151 — the market is waiting for profit, not just progress, according to GuruFocus.
