Ubisoft Details Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced's Enhanced Graphics for Next-Gen Consoles

Diffuse ray tracing illumination ensures light reflects off surfaces, creating natural gradients and smoother shading throughout the environment, while ray tracing reflections enrich surfaces like wet wood and metal, adding realism to the Caribbean setting.
There will be no Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced version for the Nintendo Switch 2 at launch, and patch notes suggest Switch-specific crossover content for Black Flag Resynced will not release on Nintendo.
Xbox Series X and Series S have distinct upscaling and frame-rate profiles: Series X targets 4K upscaling with 30, 40, or 60 FPS (including extended ray tracing in some modes), while Series S runs at 1620p upscaled with 30 FPS and standard ray tracing.
Ubisoft confirms in a tech-focused interview that Black Flag Resynced is being rebuilt using the latest iteration of the Anvil Engine, with detailed discussion on the remaking process and graphical ambitions.
Ubisoft has set July 9, 2026 as the launch date for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, and the company has now revealed the full technical picture. The remake runs on a rebuilt version of the Anvil Engine and targets 4K visuals with ray tracing across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Push Square reports that the PS5 Pro will be the most capable platform at launch, using Sony's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution — a proprietary upscaling tool — to hit 4K at 60FPS.
The remake is a significant overhaul, not a simple polish job. According to GameGPU, the Anvil Engine has been rebuilt from the ground up, with features like hair-strand rendering and ray-traced light bouncing off ship decks and wet wood. It is a major step up from the 2013 original.
On base PS5, players can pick from three modes: Performance, Fidelity, and Balanced. Each trades frame rate, resolution, and ray tracing differently. The PS5 Pro goes further. Push Square confirms it uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution — Sony's AI-based upscaling — to reach 4K at 60FPS. It also adds advanced ray tracing, including reflections off surfaces and diffuse illumination. Diffuse illumination means light bounces naturally across environments, creating smoother, more realistic shadows and gradients.
The game also features a new hair-strand rendering system. This makes character hair look lifelike instead of plastic. GameGPU noted that Ubisoft's Technical Director called the PS5 Pro the "anchor of our 4K vision" during a June 29 technical interview. Anvil Engine architect Pierre-Luc Vachon added that the goal was not a simple remaster — "every wave and every leaf reacts to light realistically."
Xbox players get a tiered experience depending on their console. Pure Xbox confirmed that the Series X offers three modes: 30FPS with maximum ray tracing, 40FPS for 120Hz TVs, and 60FPS in Performance mode. All three run at 4K upscaled. Series X owners get extended ray tracing in some modes, meaning both reflections and diffuse illumination are active.
The Xbox Series S tells a different story. It runs at 1620p upscaled — not full 4K — and is locked to 30FPS. It only supports standard ray tracing, which means reflections but no diffuse illumination. Pure Xbox reports this has frustrated some Series S owners, who feel the lower-end console is being left behind despite its upscaling capability.
There will be no Switch 2 version of Black Flag Resynced on July 9. Insider Gaming reports that the game was only announced for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Leaked patch notes spotted before the launch also showed no Nintendo-specific assets. This suggests a Switch 2 port is not coming anytime soon, not just on launch day.
Analysts say this is a calculated risk. The new hair-strand rendering and full ray-tracing suite are difficult to port to Nintendo's mobile-style hardware. Market analyst Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis called the decision a "risky but calculated move to maintain the brand's high-fidelity image." Nintendo fans have pushed back, noting that the original Black Flag sold well on Nintendo platforms via the Rebel Collection.
Ubisoft rebuilt Black Flag Resynced using the latest version of its internal Anvil Engine. This is not the same engine that ran AC Valhalla. GameGPU reports that Edward Kenway's character model now has 400% more polygons than in the 2013 original. The ray tracing system is also more advanced — Digital Foundry noted that diffuse ray tracing is a major step up from the global illumination used in Valhalla.
GamingBolt highlights 15 key changes from the original, including smoother sailing, better combat readability, and improved environmental detail. The project also serves as a live test for Anvil Pipeline, Ubisoft's unified engine framework, ahead of its next major Assassin's Creed title in 2027. A full $70 price tag is expected, given the scale of the rebuild.
