Empire Metals Upgrades Pitfield, Confirms World’s Largest Titanium Resource at 8.16 Billion Tonnes

Empire Metals has confirmed its Pitfield project in Western Australia as the world's largest titanium resource, after a major upgrade to 8.16 billion tonnes at 4.3% TiO2, containing 349 million tonnes of TiO2, according to Yahoo Finance. Shares rose on the news, which managing director Shaun Bunn called an "enormous achievement."
The upgrade covers two deposits — Thomas and Cosgrove — located about 313 km north of Perth. It also marks Pitfield's first-ever Measured Resource, the highest confidence category in mining estimates, per Proactive Investors.
The updated Mineral Resource Estimate has three tiers. The Measured category — the most reliable — covers 374 million tonnes at 5.8% TiO2, holding 21.6 million tonnes of contained TiO2. The Indicated category adds 3,650 million tonnes at 4.3% TiO2, with 154.7 million tonnes contained. The Inferred category, the least certain, covers 4,200 million tonnes at 4.1% TiO2 and 173 million tonnes contained, according to Yahoo Finance.
The resource was certified by Snowden Optiro under JORC 2012 standards — the gold standard for Australian mining reporting. Empire Metals holds a 70% stake in Pitfield via a joint venture with Century Minerals, which owns the remaining 30%, per Proactive Investors.
Both deposits contain high-grade TiO2 cores that exceed 6% TiO2. The Thomas core runs over a 5 km strike length and reaches up to 1.25 km wide. The Cosgrove core spans about 4 km of strike length. These zones are targets for early mining, according to Mining Weekly.
A near-surface weathered zone covers 4.39 billion tonnes at 4.4% TiO2. It sits under minimal overburden — meaning very little rock needs to be removed before reaching ore. This makes open-pit mining simpler and cheaper. The Thomas deposit spans about 25.5 km of strike, while Cosgrove covers 39.8 km, across a combined area of roughly 65.3 km², per Yahoo Finance.
Empire Metals has developed a processing flowsheet — a step-by-step production method — that produces TiO2 at over 99% purity. That level meets the standards for both pigment manufacturing and titanium sponge, the raw form used to make titanium metal, according to Proactive Investors.
The project already has established rail links to deep-water ports. That gives Pitfield direct access to markets in Asia, the USA, Europe, and Saudi Arabia. Titanium is a critical material used in aerospace, defence, and industry, making supply chain access a key advantage, per Yahoo Finance.
Despite the scale of the resource, Empire Metals earns no revenue yet. The company is still in development and relies on outside funding to keep operating. If financing conditions tighten, shareholder returns could suffer. Analysts hold a neutral view, noting that the enlarged resource is a strong positive but the lack of income is a real constraint, according to Proactive Investors.
Empire Metals trades on London's AIM market under the ticker EEE and on the OTCQX in the US as EPMLF. Bunn said the upgrade positions Pitfield as a "tier-one" project, but turning that potential into production and profit will require significant further investment, per Mining Weekly.
