Mitchell, Clark Make WNBA History as Indiana Fever Defeat Toronto for Fifth Straight Win

The Indiana Fever rolled past the Toronto Tempo 101-95 on the road Wednesday, securing their fifth straight win. Kelsey Mitchell led the way with 29 points before sitting out the entire fourth quarter, while Caitlin Clark added 24, according to AP News.
The duo made history in the process. Mitchell and Clark each scoring 20 or more points in the same game for the 16th time this season set a new WNBA record, surpassing the mark previously held by Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter, CBS Sports reported.
Mitchell came out firing. She poured in 16 of her 29 points in the first quarter alone, giving Indiana an early lead it never surrendered, Hastings Tribune reported. The Fever led from wire to wire against the expansion Tempo.
Mitchell also hit a personal milestone. Her 20th straight game scoring 20 or more points tied Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson for the longest such streak in WNBA history, according to CBS Sports. Despite the record-tying run, Indiana held her out for the entire final period.
Clark finished with 24 points in a strong supporting role. Sophie Cunningham was sharp from deep, hitting all three of her 3-point attempts and finishing with 13 points, per Seattle PI.
The Fever's offense clicked on multiple levels. Having both Mitchell and Clark eclipse 20 points in the same game 16 times this season shows just how reliable Indiana's one-two punch has become down the stretch.
Toronto got a boost from two returning players. Marina Mabrey scored 22 points and Brittney Sykes added 15 in her return from injury, WSOC TV reported. But it was not enough to slow Indiana down.
The loss extended Toronto's skid to 11 straight games. The Tempo, in their first WNBA season as an expansion club, have struggled to find consistency. The final score of 101-95 was close on paper, but Indiana controlled the game throughout.
Five straight wins puts Indiana in strong shape heading into the final stretch of the regular season. The Fever have leaned on their explosive backcourt to fuel the streak. Mitchell and Clark's record-setting partnership has become one of the most potent in the league, according to KTVB.
The historic Taurasi-Pondexter duo set their record during the Phoenix Mercury's prime years. Now Mitchell and Clark own it outright at 16. If their current form holds, Indiana looks built for a deep postseason run.
