Pennsylvania Authorities File Charges in Cocaine Trafficking Ring Linked to Penn State Fraternities

Fourteen people — 13 of them Penn State University students — have been charged in a cocaine-trafficking ring tied to two fraternities on campus, according to AP News. Pennsylvania's Attorney General's Office announced the charges, which stem from alleged drug activity in 2023 and 2024 involving the Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon fraternity houses.
Authorities say two main suppliers made routine trips to Philadelphia and New York to pick up large quantities of cocaine. The drugs were then packaged inside the fraternity houses and sold to Penn State students, AP News reported.
The 14 defendants face a range of charges. Four face felony counts including corrupt organizations, conspiracy, and other offenses, AP News reported. A fifth defendant is charged with felony conspiracy and related crimes. The remaining eight face misdemeanor charges tied to drug possession and tampering with evidence.
Corrupt organizations charges in Pennsylvania are serious. They are similar to federal racketeering laws and are used when a group operates as a criminal enterprise. Using them here signals prosecutors view this as an organized, ongoing operation — not just a few students making bad choices.
Investigators say the two suppliers drove repeatedly to Philadelphia and New York to buy cocaine in bulk. They then brought the drugs back to State College, Pennsylvania, where they packaged them inside Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon fraternity houses, according to Newsday.
Using fraternity houses as distribution hubs gave the ring a built-in customer base and cover, authorities say. The alleged crimes took place across 2023 and 2024, suggesting the operation ran for more than a year before charges were filed, KTAR reported.
Delta Upsilon's national organization is taking swift action. Executive Director Justin Kirk said members tied to the case knew about the allegations. Kirk stated they would be expelled or suspended if they did not resign from the fraternity on their own, according to MyNorthwest.
It is not yet clear what steps Sigma Chi's national organization has taken. Penn State University has not issued a detailed public statement about whether the students charged are still enrolled or have been disciplined by the school.
This case is part of a broader trend. College fraternities across the United States have faced drug trafficking investigations in recent years. Cocaine, in particular, has shown up repeatedly in cases involving Greek-letter organizations at large universities, AP News noted.
For Penn State, the case adds to scrutiny the university already faces over fraternity culture. The school drew national attention in 2017 after a student died following a Beta Theta Pi hazing incident. Cases like this one keep pressure on universities to more tightly oversee Greek life on campus, Newsday reported.
