Brendan O'Carroll Postpones Mrs Brown's Christmas Specials Following Jaw Fractures Requiring Surgery

The Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Panto shows planned for Dublin (3 Arena) and INEC Killarney were postponed and are being targeted for a 2027 reschedule.
CT scans revealed two fractures in Brendan O’Carroll’s mandible (jaw) requiring immediate surgery and several months of recovery.
O’Carroll publicly thanked MCD and the BBC for their support and indicated ongoing collaboration to bring Mrs Brown’s Boys back on screen in 2027.
In a past interview with The Standard, O’Carroll said Mrs Brown’s Boys will remain on television for as long as the BBC wants it, underscoring his long-term commitment to the show.
Brendan O'Carroll has cancelled the Mrs Brown's Boys 2026 Christmas and New Year's specials after CT scans revealed two fractures in his jaw requiring immediate surgery. The 70-year-old comedian, who plays Agnes Brown, said he is "heartbroken" but has no choice but to follow medical advice and focus on his recovery. The Independent reported the news alongside confirmation that his planned live shows have also been postponed.
O'Carroll thanked fans for their support and promised that Agnes Brown and her family will return. He is targeting a 2027 comeback for both the BBC specials and the live stage productions.
O'Carroll discovered the injuries after undergoing CT scans for what he described as an "unexpected medical issue." The scans showed two fractures in his mandible — the lower jawbone. Doctors told him he needed immediate surgery followed by several months of recovery. Yahoo News reported that filming for the 2026 specials was scrapped as a direct result.
The surgery and recovery timeline made it impossible to film the Christmas and New Year's specials in time for a 2026 broadcast. O'Carroll apologised sincerely to fans and said the decision was not taken lightly. He stressed that his health must come first before any return to production.
Beyond the TV specials, O'Carroll also postponed the Mrs Brown's Boys D'Panto stage shows. The productions were set for the 3 Arena in Dublin and the INEC venue in Killarney. He is working with promoter MCD to find new dates, with 2027 the target for rescheduling both runs.
O'Carroll publicly thanked MCD for their understanding and flexibility. He made clear that the postponement is not a cancellation and that he fully intends to bring the live show back. Fans who bought tickets are expected to be contacted about new dates once they are confirmed.
O'Carroll confirmed that the BBC remains on board and that discussions are ongoing about bringing Mrs Brown's Boys back to screens in 2027. He thanked the BBC for their support during what he called a difficult time. In a past interview with The Standard, O'Carroll said the show will stay on television "for as long as the BBC wants it," signalling his long-term commitment.
The 2026 cancellation marks a rare gap in a run of Christmas specials that has made Mrs Brown's Boys one of the BBC's most-watched holiday programmes for over a decade. O'Carroll said he is focused entirely on recovery right now. He promised fans that Agnes Brown will be back and that the wait will be worth it.
