Iran Fires Ballistic Missiles at Israel; Israel Retaliates with Strikes Across Iran Amid Escalation

Tensions between Iran and Israel escalated after an Iranian military spokesperson warned that the “zionist army” must stop attacks on southern Lebanon and Beirut, followed hours later by Iran firing ballistic missiles toward Israel. Israel said it intercepted most of the incoming missiles with air-defense systems and then carried out retaliatory strikes on military targets in western and central Iran, the first such attacks since the April 8 ceasefire. Explosions were reported in multiple Iranian cities including Tehran, Tabriz, Isfahan, and others. Both sides described their actions as responses to Israeli operations tied to Hezbollah and to alleged Israeli strikes on Beirut. The exchange proceeded despite U.S. President Donald Trump urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to retaliate further, amid warnings that additional rounds could unravel negotiations and widen the conflict. Several reports also said Iran threatened broader action, including against U.S. interests in the region, if Israel continued striking.
