Former Manchester United Star Paul Scholes Receives Six-Month Driving Ban After Two Speeding Convictions

The first offence occurred on the A649 Halifax Road near Cleckheaton just after 11:30pm on 3 March, with the Range Rover clocked at 37mph in a 30mph zone in West Yorkshire; the second offence was on Mossley Road (A670) near Ashton-under-Lyne at about 11:10am on 14 November, with a Mercedes registered to Scholes recorded at 49mph in a 30mph limit in Greater Manchester.
The two hearings were held at Bradford Magistrates' Court (first case) on 12 August and at Manchester Magistrates' Court (second case) on the following day, both conducted under private Single Justice Procedure.
The total penalties across both cases amounted to £1,472, with a breakdown including a first-offence £220 fine, £120 in costs and an £88 victim surcharge, and a second-offence £660 fine among other costs.
Scholes replied to a notice of intended prosecution, confirming he had been the driver, after his Range Rover was recorded speeding, indicating that he accepted responsibility for the driving offences.
Paul Scholes has been banned from driving for six months after being caught speeding twice in two days. The 51-year-old former Manchester United star was convicted at two separate magistrates' courts and ordered to pay a total of £1,472 in fines and fees, according to Daily Mail.
Scholes did not appear at either hearing. Both cases were decided under private Single Justice Procedure hearings, meaning a single magistrate ruled without a full court sitting. Because he already had penalty points on his licence, he was classed as a 'totter' — someone who has accumulated enough points to face an automatic ban — making a speed awareness course unavailable, This Is Money reported.
The first offence happened just after 11:30pm on 3 March on the A649 Halifax Road near Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire. A Range Rover was clocked at 37mph in a 30mph zone. Scholes later replied to a notice of intended prosecution and confirmed he was the driver, according to Daily Mail.
Less than 48 hours later, a Mercedes registered to Scholes was recorded doing 49mph in a 30mph limit on Mossley Road near Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester. That offence occurred at around 11:10am on 14 November. Belfast Live noted that Scholes ignored police requests in connection with the second incident.
The first case was heard at Bradford Magistrates' Court on 12 August. Scholes was fined £220, ordered to pay £120 in costs, and charged an £88 victim surcharge. The second case was heard the very next day at Manchester Magistrates' Court, where he received a £660 fine on top of further costs and fees, This Is Money reported.
The combined total across both cases came to £1,472. The six-month driving ban was applied because his existing penalty points pushed him over the legal threshold. His representatives did not contest either sentence, according to Head Topics.
Scholes is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation. He made 499 appearances for Manchester United and won multiple Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy. He retired in 2013 after more than two decades at Old Trafford.
His driving ban adds to a growing pattern of football figures facing traffic-related legal action in the UK. Scholes has not made any public comment on the convictions, and his representatives have not challenged either ruling, according to Daily Mail.
