Apple's App Store Ecosystem Hits $1.4 Trillion in 2025, Fueled by AI Growth

A study commissioned by Apple and conducted by Analysis Group says the App Store ecosystem facilitated about $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales globally in 2025, nearly tripling since 2019 and reaching over 850 million average weekly users across 175 countries and regions. Most of the activity came from physical goods and services at $1.1 trillion, while digital goods and services totaled $149 billion and in-app advertising added $151 billion. The research also finds an outsized boost from AI: more than 40 of the top 100 billing apps with consumer-facing AI grew their billings at about four times the rate of other top apps. Regionally, China led with $562 billion, followed by the U.S. at $453 billion, Europe at $184 billion, and Japan at $52 billion. The report notes Apple collects commissions on less than 10% of total App Store-generated sales, but antitrust regulators have scrutinized Apple’s standard 30% cut on digital goods and additional fees for certain developer programs, including the ongoing legal dispute with Epic Games over outside payments.
The study breaks down the $1.1 trillion in physical-goods/services activity further: general retail accounts for $673 billion, travel $165 billion, food delivery and pickup $120 billion, and grocery $98 billion; ride-hailing adds $64 billion and digital payment services $16 billion.
Analysis Group’s commissioned report provides category-specific growth since 2019: digital goods and services grew 2.4x, physical goods and services increased by 2.8%, and in-app advertising revenue climbed 2.9x (even though the overall ecosystem is described as nearly tripling).
Apple says the App Store’s AI push is tied to its Foundation Models framework—leveraging the on-device large language model at the core of Apple Intelligence—to help developers build features that protect users’ privacy and are available offline.
Apple does not separately disclose App Store revenue; one article notes it is instead counted within Apple’s Services segment, with Services at $109.1 billion out of $416.1 billion in total revenue in fiscal 2025.
Outside the Apple/Analysis Group ecosystem study, UBS analyst David Vogt said App Store revenue tracking was about +3% in May (slower than April), with a 7% decline in the U.S.; quarter-to-date growth tracked about 4%, while June was facing a still-challenging 12% comp.
