Hurricane Lowell Kauai Power Outages

Hurricane Lowell batters Hawaii with high winds, knocking out power across Kauai.

Hurricane Lowell has caused significant damage to Hawaii's western islands, knocking out power to thousands and causing widespread power outages on the island of Kauai, home to 73,000 residents. The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative reported that nearly all of its 35,000 members were without power due to the storm. The National Hurricane Center reported that sustained winds reached 80 mph, but the storm weakened and was no longer a hurricane. The storm's tropical storm-force winds extended well beyond the center, and sustained winds measured just above 50 mph at Lihue Airport, the island's only commercial airport, closed after the storm's impact. Along the Southern California coast, dangerous surf conditions were expected to persist for several days. The remnants of Hurricane Marie were also causing dangerous surf and life-threatening surf conditions along the coast of Mexico’s Baja California and Southern California.
