Yankees Left-Hander Carlos Rodón Comes Off Injured List to Start Against Baltimore Orioles

Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodón is skipping a planned minor league start and coming straight back to the majors. According to AP News, Rodón will come off the 15-day injured list to start against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday — a clear change of plans from what the team had said just days earlier.
Rodón has been out since July 3 with left elbow inflammation. He received multiple shots, including platelet-rich plasma injections, to get healthy. He made two minor league starts earlier this month — one at Triple-A and one at Double-A Somerset — before the Yankees decided he was ready for the big leagues again.
The original plan had Rodón making another minor league start on Tuesday. Instead, the Yankees flipped the script. Beaumont Enterprise noted this was an about-face for the team, which had publicly stated Rodón would pitch in the minors that day before changing course.
The move puts Rodón back on a big league mound against a familiar AL East rival. The Baltimore Orioles will be his first opponent since returning from injury. The Yankees likely saw enough in his two rehab starts to feel confident he was ready for game action at the highest level.
This is not the first time Rodón's left elbow has cost him time in 2024. He missed the entire first month of the season after offseason elbow surgery. Then he landed back on the injured list on July 3 with inflammation in that same elbow.
To treat the inflammation, doctors gave him several shots, including platelet-rich plasma injections. PRP therapy uses a patient's own blood — spun in a machine to concentrate healing proteins — and injects it directly into the injured area to speed recovery.
When Rodón has been on the mound this year, he has been sharp. In nine starts, he is 4-2 with a 3.30 ERA. Those are solid numbers for any pitcher — and especially encouraging for one dealing with elbow issues all season.
The bigger picture is a little rougher. Since joining the Yankees, Rodón is 41-28 with a 4.93 ERA across 88 starts, per Baltimore Sun. The Yankees are counting on him to help anchor a rotation that needs dependable arms down the stretch of the season.
Getting Rodón back is a boost for a Yankees team battling in the AL East. A healthy Rodón at 3.30 ERA is a genuine weapon. The team clearly did not want to waste another rehab start if he was already ready to go.
The Orioles, Rodón's first opponent back, are themselves in the thick of the division race. Tuesday's game at Baltimore sets up as a high-stakes matchup. How Rodón handles his elbow through a full big-league outing will tell the Yankees a lot about what they can expect from him going forward.
