Pentagon Casualty Update

Pentagon adds thirty-seven wounded service members to its official Iran conflict casualty tally.

The Pentagon’s casualty database added 37 wounded service members to its Iran-conflict tally, bringing the total to 861, without publicly explaining when or how the new injuries occurred. The additions comprise 29 Navy sailors and eight Marines; a Navy official said all 29 sailors have returned to duty. Defense officials have said casualty records can be updated late, particularly for concussions and traumatic brain injuries whose symptoms may emerge later. More than half of those listed as wounded are categorized under “Overseas Operations,” which covers casualties recorded after the U.S.-Iran ceasefire collapsed in July. The increase comes amid scrutiny of casualty reporting, including reports that some military deaths may be missing from the Pentagon’s public database.
