BTS Leader RM Becomes National Museum of Korea's First Global Ambassador

A prior donation by RM is described as having been used for specific restoration work: the money supported conservation and restoration of Joseon-era wedding robes (a cultural property located overseas).
The reporting also says RM contributed to the production of a catalog introducing Korean painting works—beyond funding preservation efforts.
Details of RM’s SFMOMA exhibition are expanded: “RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me” is co-curated by RM, features some 200 works from his collection alongside pieces from SFMOMA’s holdings, and is scheduled to run from October through February 2027.
Museum director You Hong-june said the partnership is “meaningful” because it allows the museum to share the beauty of Korean cultural heritage with the world “together with RM.”
At the appointment ceremony, RM said, “I want to do my part so that the beauty and value of our cultural heritage can reach more people,” framing the ambassador role as a direct public-service effort to widen cultural access.
BTS leader RM has been named the first-ever global ambassador of the National Museum of Korea, the country's flagship cultural institution. The appointment, announced on June 20, 2026, makes him the public face of efforts to share Korean history and traditional art with audiences around the world, according to Korea Herald.
At the signing ceremony, RM received a special edition reproduction of the Daedongyeojido, a 19th-century map of Korea. He then toured an ongoing exhibition on Joseon-era painter Kim Hong-do alongside museum director You Hong-june, allkpop reported.
RM's path to this role started quietly in September 2021. He donated 100 million won to the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation. The money funded conservation of a Joseon-era wedding robe, called a hwarot, held by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Only 40 to 50 of these robes are known to exist in the world, according to The Korea Times.
A second 100 million won donation followed in September 2022. That money went toward producing an English-language catalog of Korean paintings held in international collections, Korea Herald reported. Together, his contributions total 200 million won — roughly $150,000 — and cemented his standing as a serious patron of Korean cultural heritage, not just a celebrity fan.
At the ceremony, RM made clear the role was about public service, not celebrity branding. "I want to do my part so that the beauty and value of our cultural heritage can reach more people," he said, according to Seoul Daily. He framed his goal as connecting the past with the present, and Korea with the world.
Museum director You Hong-june matched that tone. "It is meaningful to share the beauty of our cultural heritage with the world together with RM," he said, Newsy Today reported. He added that he expects RM to play a "significant role" in making the museum loved worldwide.
The ambassadorship is not RM's only major cultural move right now. A large solo exhibition called "RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me" is set to open at San Francisco's SFMOMA on October 3, 2026. It runs through February 2027. The show is co-curated by RM himself and spans roughly 200 works, allkpop reported.
About 150 works come from RM's personal collection. The rest are drawn from SFMOMA's own holdings. Chief Curator Janet Bishop said visitors will get "an unprecedented opportunity to explore RM's contemplative collection" in dialogue with the museum's pieces. It will be the first time a major U.S. museum has dedicated this scale of space to a collection owned by a K-pop artist.
RM's fans, known as ARMY, have a history of visiting galleries and museums he posts about on social media. This grassroots movement has driven 20 to 30 percent spikes in younger visitor attendance at exhibitions he mentions, according to Seoul Daily. The NMK is now betting that formalizing his role will multiply that impact.
Analysts describe the move as one of Korea's sharpest soft-power strategies in years. Unlike a typical celebrity endorsement, RM's years of documented museum visits and public support for artists like Yun Hyong-keun give the partnership real credibility, Korea Herald noted. The museum is positioning itself to compete with institutions like the Louvre and the Met on a global stage.
