NOAA declares active El Niño set to strengthen, bringing varied extreme weather and marine ecosystem disruptions globally.

The disturbance’s forecast evolution includes a weak trough/low-pressure center emerging from the Yucatán Peninsula between Thursday (June 11) and Friday night (June 12), bringing “thunderstorms, strong winds and rough seas” across the west-central Gulf through Sunday (June 14), even if the system itself doesn’t significantly develop.
NHC-linked reporting traces the disturbance to Tropical Storm Cristina’s remnants and adds timing: Cristina is forecast to move inland near El Salvador “Wednesday night before weakening,” with some models suggesting its moisture/energy could later emerge over the Bay of Campeche to help a new low develop.
Beyond the Bay of Campeche feature, the NHC is also tracking three tropical waves across the Atlantic; one wave’s axis is near 42W (south of 15N, moving west at 10–15 knots) with no significant convection observed by the NWS, while another wave shows scattered moderate convection between about 53W and 58W.
NOAA’s earlier seasonal outlook included a quantified likelihood: in May, the agency predicted a below-normal Atlantic season with a “55% probability,” and forecasters noted that if the Bay of Campeche system ever became a named storm, it would be called “Arthur.”
While no direct U.S. threat is expected, one report specifies the initial guidance area more narrowly: the system is expected to remain “well south and west of the northern Gulf Coast” and poses no threat to Alabama, northwest Florida, Mississippi, or Louisiana at this time.

The disturbance is expected to move inland over eastern Mexico by Sunday, June 14, posing no direct threat to the U.S. Gulf Coast. But even a system that never becomes a named storm can still bring heavy rain, rough seas, and thunderstorms to the region, PNJ reported.
The disturbance traces back to Tropical Storm Cristina, which formed in the Eastern Pacific on June 8. Cristina made landfall near El Salvador on June 10 and began to fall apart over mountainous terrain. But its mid-level moisture and energy survived the crossing into the Gulf, according to BNO News.
This type of event — a Pacific storm's remnants crossing into the Atlantic — is called a "crossover" system. The Bay of Campeche, with its warm shallow waters, is a known breeding ground for early-season Gulf storms. By June 11, the NHC was tracking a weak trough emerging from the Yucatán Peninsula, with a low-pressure center expected to consolidate by June 12, AOL reported.
The NHC said on June 11 that "environmental conditions appear generally unfavorable for significant development due to persistent wind shear and the presence of dry air across the northern Gulf." On top of shear, thick Saharan dust is drifting across the Atlantic through much of June. Meteorologists describe this as a "triple threat" of suppression: high wind shear, dry air, and proximity to land. Independent analysts say these three factors will likely prevent the system from ever being named "Arthur" — the first name on the 2026 list, per Rolling Out.
Even without becoming a named storm, the system will act as a "weather maker." The NHC expects thunderstorms, strong winds, and rough seas across the west-central Gulf through Sunday, June 14. Small-craft operations and offshore supply runs near the Bay of Campeche will likely face delays.
The National Weather Service office in Brownsville warned that "residents in South Texas should monitor the evolution of this system," noting that tropical moisture could bring localized heavy rainfall and minor coastal flooding by the weekend. For northeastern Mexico, a rain-heavy but non-damaging system could actually help fill drought-stricken reservoirs, KTSM noted.
NOAA's 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook, released in May, calls for 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes, and 1 to 3 major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger). The agency puts a 55% probability on a below-normal season. A strong El Niño is the main reason — it increases wind shear across the Atlantic, making it harder for storms to form, per KTSM.
The NHC is also tracking three additional tropical waves moving across the Atlantic. One wave near 42°W is moving west at 10 to 15 knots with no major activity. Another between 53°W and 58°W shows scattered moderate thunderstorms. Despite the quiet start, NOAA Administrator Dr. Rick Spinrad stressed: "A below-normal season does not mean a no-impact season. It only takes one storm to change the lives of a community forever."
