Darkest Dungeon Receives Major 'The Fire’s Edge' Update, Introducing New Heroes and Mechanics in August 2026

Darkest Dungeon: The Fire’s Edge introduces Burn as a new combat mechanic in the original game, with the Runaway class bringing a dedicated burn damage type to the roster.
The Duelist is described as a complex damage dealer that dances between the party’s ranks, a re-imagining of the DD2 character for use in the base game.
Three new Hamlet districts are included: Academie Duello, Craftworks, and Archaeological Base Camp.
Trinkets are being reworked with new mechanics such as Trigger Uses, Quest Charges, and Progressive Trinkets.
The Fire’s Edge is slated to release on August 18, 2026 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Nintendo platforms, with Xbox timing to follow.
Red Hook Studios is bringing the original Darkest Dungeon its first new DLC in six years. The expansion, called The Fire's Edge, arrives on August 18, 2026 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Nintendo platforms — with Xbox timing still to be announced, according to Rock Paper Shotgun.
The DLC marks the game's 10th anniversary since its 1.0 launch, Eurogamer reports. It pulls two hero classes from Darkest Dungeon II — the Duelist and the Runaway — and reimagines them for the original game. New mechanics, new districts, and reworked trinkets round out the package.
The Runaway brings a brand-new combat mechanic to the original game: Burn. She deals fire damage over time, a damage type that has never appeared in the base game before. She is described as a dedicated burn specialist, giving veteran players a fresh way to approach familiar fights, according to Prima Games.
The Duelist is built around movement. She shifts between party ranks during combat, acting as a complex damage dealer. Rock Paper Shotgun notes she is a re-imagining of her Darkest Dungeon II counterpart, redesigned to fit the mechanics and feel of the original game.
The Fire's Edge adds three new districts to the Hamlet, the hub players return to between missions. The three areas are the Academie Duello, the Craftworks, and the Archaeological Base Camp. Each adds new options and progression tied to the DLC's content, Turn Based Lovers reports.
New events and writing are also included, designed to give veteran players fresh story content. Red Hook describes these additions as optional mechanics, so long-time players can engage at their own pace without disrupting familiar runs.
Trinkets — the equippable items that shape hero builds — are getting a significant rework. The DLC introduces three new trinket types: Trigger Uses, Quest Charges, and Progressive Trinkets. These add conditional and evolving effects that go beyond the flat stat bonuses of the original system, according to Head Topics.
Progressive Trinkets grow stronger as players meet certain conditions during a run. Trigger Uses and Quest Charges add limited-use effects tied to specific moments in combat or campaigns. The changes give players more decisions to make when gearing up their party.
Red Hook frames The Fire's Edge as more than a nostalgia update. The studio calls it a bridge between the first game and Darkest Dungeon II, connecting lore and mechanics across both titles. The last DLC for the original game, The Butcher's Circus, arrived in 2020 — making this a six-year gap, Turn Based Lovers notes.
Red Hook has also teased further content for Darkest Dungeon II beyond this release. That suggests the studio sees The Fire's Edge not as a final sendoff, but as the start of a broader expansion push across both games, according to Eurogamer.
