Despite Successful Return, Rockingham Speedway Not on NASCAR Schedule for 2027

Rockingham Speedway was sold earlier this year, adding to ongoing scheduling uncertainty for future NASCAR events.
The track sits on a 0.94-mile oval, a historic and defining characteristic that influences the racing product at Rockingham.
In 2025, Rockingham hosted NASCAR national series races for the first time in more than a decade, marking a notable return that drew strong crowds and atmosphere.
There has been talk that NASCAR could return to Rockingham in the future, but as of now there are no concrete plans for a 2027 or subsequent schedule.
Rockingham originally opened in 1965, underscoring its long-standing history as a storied venue in American stock car racing.
Rockingham Speedway will not host any NASCAR national series races in 2027, promoter Track Enterprises confirmed. The decision ends a two-year run that brought stock car racing back to the historic North Carolina oval after more than a decade away. Racer reported that financial uncertainty surrounding the facility was the driving factor behind the call.
Track Enterprises' Bob Sargent called the 2025 return 'a special opportunity,' crediting fans, sponsors, and local officials for exceeding expectations. But with Rockingham's ownership situation still unsettled, locking in a 2027 date proved impossible. Speedway Digest reported no NASCAR-sanctioned events will take place at The Rock next season.
NASCAR returned to Rockingham in 2025 for the first time in over a decade. The O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, Craftsman Truck Series, and ARCA Menards Series East all raced at the 0.94-mile oval. The Racing Experts reported that both seasons drew strong fan turnout and created a memorable atmosphere at the track.
Sargent said the support from the community and competitors was 'beyond what we expected.' Still, two strong seasons were not enough to secure a third. Track Enterprises confirmed the 2027 schedule will not include Rockingham, though the promoter said it remains hopeful about future opportunities to return.
Rockingham Speedway was sold earlier this year, adding a new layer of uncertainty to an already complicated situation. The track's ownership has passed through the hands of IHRA, which faced ongoing financial struggles. Racer noted that this financial instability played a direct role in the decision not to schedule 2027 races.
Catchfence reported that Track Enterprises confirmed the decision through a press release, citing the unsettled state of the facility. Without stable ownership in place, locking in multi-series race weekends carries too much risk for a promoter to commit to a full schedule.
Rockingham Speedway first opened in 1965. For decades it was a staple of NASCAR's top series, known for its tight, abrasive surface that wore out tires fast and rewarded smart racing. The 0.94-mile oval produced some of stock car racing's most memorable moments before going dark for major events years ago.
Recent renovations helped make the 2025 return possible. The Racing Experts noted the track worked to upgrade facilities ahead of NASCAR's comeback. That effort paid off in the short term, but the long-term future of The Rock remains tied to whoever controls it next.
Track Enterprises did not close the door permanently. The promoter said it remains optimistic about bringing racing back to Rockingham in the future. Head Topics reported that the facility's removal from the 2027 calendar was framed as a pause, not a farewell.
No concrete plans exist for 2028 or beyond. Any return will depend on how the ownership situation resolves. For now, fans of The Rock are left waiting, hoping that the energy of those 2025 crowds is enough to bring NASCAR back someday.
