Australian of the Year Richard Scolyer dies, known for pioneering brain cancer treatment.

Melanoma pathologist and Australian of the Year Richard Scolyer died at 59 after a prolonged battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer he was diagnosed with in 2023. He and fellow researcher Professor Georgina Long had undertaken a world-first experimental treatment based on melanoma science, a risky effort Scolyer said could still advance knowledge even if it shortened his life. Scolyer’s work led to recognition as Australian of the Year, reflecting his broader impact on cancer research and clinical trials. In an open letter to Australians published through representatives, he urged continued boundary-pushing in cancer research, framed his transparency about the illness as a source of hope for patients and families, and said he hoped the data and awareness he generated would help future sufferers. Multiple outlets also highlighted his desire to be remembered as an “everyday Aussie” who “gave it a crack,” alongside acknowledgments that his family faced major upheaval during his illness.
Scolyer and Professor Georgina Long were jointly recognised as Australian of the Year for their work as co-directors at the Melanoma Institute of Australia, underscoring that the honour was tied directly to their leadership in melanoma-to-brain cancer research translation.
In explaining the risk of the experimental approach, Scolyer said, “At worst, I’ll leave the legacy of increased scientific knowledge to benefit future brain cancer patients.”
Scolyer suggested that “the immunotherapy treatments and vaccine might have made a difference,” and said the potential benefits of the experimental procedures were worth the risk even if they could shorten his life further.
In his open letter, Scolyer wrote that he was “the first patient to receive experimental brain cancer treatment based on melanoma science I helped develop,” adding that this was followed by participation in development of a brain cancer clinical trial and advocacy for greater investment in brain cancer research.
Scolyer also wrote that he was “perhaps lucky” because the physical and cognitive impacts of late-stage brain cancer meant he was “unlikely to have been aware of [his] own decline over these final weeks.”
