DCH Health System Earns Top Award for Diverting 56,000 Medical Devices from Landfills

DCH Health System kept more than 56,000 medical device units out of landfills over the past year — and earned a top environmental award for it. Patch reported that Stryker's Sustainability Solutions presented the Alabama-based health network with its Environmental Excellence Award for reducing waste and conserving natural resources.
The program also blocked an estimated 561 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. That is roughly equal to taking 120 gasoline-powered cars off the road for a full year, according to EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies data.
DCH runs what is called a "single-use device reprocessing" program. Hospitals normally throw away devices like pulse oximeter sensors and surgical tools after one use. Instead, DCH collects them. A third-party company cleans, tests, sterilizes, and returns them for reuse. The FDA regulates these reprocessed devices to the same safety standards as new ones.
Stryker's Sustainability Solutions is the largest company of its kind in the industry. It partners with DCH across its three main Alabama facilities: DCH Regional Medical Center, Northport Medical Center, and Fayette Medical Center. Natalie Ward, VP and General Manager of Stryker's Sustainability Solutions, has said awards like this go to facilities that "lead by example with commitment to initiatives that reduce costs and optimize resources."
Cutting waste also cuts costs. Reprocessing typically saves hospitals 25% to 50% per device compared to buying new ones, according to industry data from AMDR. For a system diverting 56,000 units, that likely adds up to more than $1 million in annual savings. That money can go back into patient care or staff.
Stryker's partner hospitals collectively saved $239 million through reprocessing in 2023 alone, according to Stryker SSS Newsroom. DCH's recognition places it among top performers out of 3,773 healthcare facilities that Stryker recognized that year.
The healthcare sector produces about 8.5% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, according to the National Academy of Medicine. Hospitals have long run on a "buy it, use it, throw it away" model. Programs like DCH's push toward what experts call a "circular economy" — keeping materials in use longer instead of sending them straight to a landfill.
In Alabama, where hospital profit margins are often thin, DCH's success offers a clear model. Analysts at Vizient note that supply chain leaders are shifting focus from "price per unit" to "total life-cycle impact." DCH's achievement may pressure other health systems in the state to launch similar programs, especially as federal agencies urge hospitals to reduce dependence on single-use supplies.
Not everyone is on board. Medical device makers who sell original equipment argue that reprocessing adds safety risks. But the Association of Medical Device Reprocessors counters that reprocessing is one of the most strictly regulated areas the FDA oversees, with no proven increase in infection risk. Stryker reports a 99.96% success rate for its reprocessed devices in clinical use.
Some environmental groups question how Stryker calculates its carbon savings. They argue that shipping devices back and forth to reprocessing facilities could offset some gains. Stryker says its life cycle assessments are peer-reviewed and show roughly a 38% emissions reduction for devices like surgical Harmonic shears — figures that factored into DCH's 561-metric-ton total.
