TekniPlex Awards FY2026 TeknoVation Winners for Advancing Healthcare Packaging and Tubing Solutions

TekniPlex has named three winners of its FY2026 TeknoVation Awards, all from its Healthcare Division. The awards honor internal innovation in materials science and packaging engineering, according to National Post.
The three winning projects tackle distinct challenges: simplifying PVC compound manufacturing, creating fully recyclable pharmaceutical blister packaging, and building a next-generation weldable tube platform for medical devices. Each project aims to cut costs, speed up production, or reduce environmental impact.
The top prize went to a team that developed a proprietary PVC compounding process. The compound is designed to work reliably across multiple processing platforms — meaning manufacturers do not need a different formula for each machine or method. Daily Guardian reported this could reduce repeated qualification work and lower costs.
The biggest practical benefit is time to market. Pharmaceutical and medical device makers must run extensive qualification tests before using any new material. By using one universal compound across platforms, companies can skip redundant testing cycles and get products to patients faster.
The second-place winner is a patented solution for pharmaceutical blister packaging. Traditional blister packs often use aluminum foil or complex laminated layers to block moisture and oxygen. This new design replaces those materials entirely. National Post noted the project reduces the use of aluminum-based materials while keeping the same performance standards.
The structure combines a peelable polypropylene (PP) lid with a coextruded PP and cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) base layer. COC is a rigid, clear plastic often used in drug packaging. The entire blister pack — lid and base together — can be recycled where recycling infrastructure exists. That is a significant step, since most current blister packs cannot be recycled at all.
The third-place project developed a new weldable tube platform for medical and biopharmaceutical applications. Weldable tubing is used in drug manufacturing processes where sterile connections are critical. The tube must bond cleanly without contamination or leaks, according to Cochrane Times Post.
TekniPlex says this platform aligns with its global manufacturing footprint. The company is vertically integrated, meaning it handles everything from raw material development to finished tubing extrusion in-house. That gives it tighter quality control and faster turnaround compared to suppliers who outsource parts of the process.
The TeknoVation Awards are TekniPlex's internal program for recognizing breakthrough work across its divisions. All three FY2026 winners came from the Healthcare Division, signaling where the company is focusing its research energy. The projects span materials, packaging, and device components — covering a wide slice of the healthcare supply chain.
Taken together, the three projects reflect two big pressures facing healthcare manufacturers right now: sustainability and speed. The recyclable blister pack addresses growing regulatory and consumer pressure to cut plastic waste. The universal PVC compound and weldable tubing both target faster, cheaper pathways from lab to market, according to Daily Herald Tribune.
