August 17 Marks Miles Davis's 'Kind of Blue' Anniversary Alongside Other Global Historical Events

On August 17, 1959, Miles Davis released "Kind of Blue," a record that would become the best-selling jazz album of all time. Denver Post reports that the date marks one of music history's most defining moments, as Davis and his bandmates — including John Coltrane and Bill Evans — recorded the album in just two sessions earlier that year.
August 17 is also packed with other landmark moments across more than two centuries of world history. From the first steamboat voyage in 1807 to a deadly earthquake in Turkey in 1999, the date has witnessed revolutions, disasters, and breakthroughs that shaped the modern world.
"Kind of Blue" was recorded in March and April of 1959 and released on August 17 of that year. The album introduced a new style called modal jazz. Instead of complex chord progressions, Davis built songs around musical scales. This gave musicians more freedom to improvise.
The album featured an all-star lineup that included John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and pianist Bill Evans. It has sold millions of copies and never gone out of print. Critics and musicians still rank it as one of the greatest albums ever made — in any genre.
On August 17, 1807, Robert Fulton's North River Steamboat made its first successful voyage on the Hudson River. The ship traveled from New York City to Albany — roughly 150 miles — proving that steam power could move people reliably up and down major waterways.
The voyage marked the beginning of commercial steamboat travel in America. It transformed trade and movement along rivers, opening the interior of the continent to faster, more dependable transport than sail or horse-drawn carriages could provide.
On August 17, 1945 — just two days after Japan surrendered in World War II — Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta proclaimed independence for Indonesia. The declaration ended more than 300 years of Dutch colonial rule. But the Netherlands refused to accept it.
What followed was the Indonesian National Revolution, a four-year armed struggle against Dutch forces. The Netherlands finally recognized Indonesian sovereignty in December 1949. Today, August 17 is celebrated as Indonesian Independence Day, a national holiday for the world's fourth-most populous country.
On August 17, 1999, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Turkey's Kocaeli Province, killing more than 17,000 people. The quake hit just after 3 a.m. local time, when most residents were asleep. Tens of thousands of buildings collapsed almost instantly.
The disaster left hundreds of thousands of people homeless and caused an estimated $20 billion in damage. It remains one of the deadliest earthquakes in Turkey's recorded history. The tragedy led Turkey to overhaul its building codes and disaster response systems in the years that followed.
