Major Retailers Launch Last-Chance Summer Sales with Deep Discounts Before July 4th Weekend

Even with Amazon Prime Day and Target Circle Deals now over, major retailers are rolling out deep discounts just before the July 4th weekend. Best Buy is cutting appliance prices by up to 45%, Walmart is slashing its Walmart+ membership to $49 per year, and QVC's Christmas in July sale is already underway, according to USA Today Network.
Analysts warn that the "last-chance" window is real — and short. Retailers are clearing warehouse space for back-to-school inventory expected to arrive by July 10, according to Barron's. Once that stock arrives, the deep discounts disappear.
Best Buy launched its 4th of July Appliance Sale on June 25, offering what it calls a "guaranteed lowest price of the season" on major brands like Samsung and LG, The Wall Street Journal reported. Discounts reach up to 45% on refrigerators, washers, and dryers. CEO Corie Barry is bundling the deals with high-touch installation services to drive bigger sales.
These are unusually deep cuts for big-ticket items. Retail experts say discounts like these typically don't show up until November. If you need a new appliance, this window — before July 4th — is the best pricing most shoppers will see all year.
Walmart launched a flash sale on June 28 cutting its Walmart+ membership in half — from $98 to $49 per year, according to Reuters. CEO Doug McMillon framed it as a move to help families during high inflation. "We are focused on removing friction for the American family," McMillon said in a recent earnings call.
Analysts at Goldman Sachs say the $49 price is a direct defensive move against TikTok Shop, which has been pulling younger shoppers away from Walmart. MarketWatch projects the discount could bring in 2 to 3 million new Walmart+ subscribers, reshaping grocery delivery market share for the rest of 2026.
QVC kicked off its Christmas in July campaign on June 23 — a full week earlier than last year, according to a QVC corporate press release. The sale covers holiday decor, artificial trees, ornaments, lighting, and giftable finds. Artificial tree sales during QVC's June window jumped 30% compared to the year before, per QVC's quarterly report.
Retail psychologists say Christmas in July gives shoppers a "stress-relief valve." It lets people feel proactive about holiday spending while still enjoying summer deals, according to Psychology Today. QVC is also targeting self-gifters — people buying lifestyle products for themselves, not just gifts for others.
Not everyone is cheering. Consumer Reports warned that "deep discounts" of 45–50% are often calculated from original list prices that haven't been active in months. They advise shoppers to use price-tracking tools instead of trusting countdown timers that create false urgency.
The Federal Reserve has also raised concerns. The rise of "Buy Now, Pay Later" options during summer sales is pushing household debt higher, Reuters reported. Consumers are treating 50%-off deals as necessities rather than luxuries. Total consumer spending for the July 4th weekend is forecast to hit $12.7 billion, according to the National Retail Federation.
