Trulioo Launches AI Agent to Resolve Beneficial Ownership Gaps in Global Registries
Trulioo has launched the UBO Discovery Agent, an AI tool that finds the true owners of businesses in countries where official registries fall short. According to Financial Post, early deployments have boosted UBO coverage by 20 to 80 percent compared to registry-only research alone.
In the toughest markets, the agent has pushed coverage above 90 percent, National Post reported. That is a major leap for compliance teams trying to root out financial crime in regions like the US, Latin America, and Asia Pacific.
Most countries keep records of company shareholders and directors. But those records rarely name the real person in charge — the ultimate beneficial owner, or UBO. According to National Post, registries typically record shareholders and directors of record rather than the actual humans pulling the strings behind shell companies or complex ownership chains.
The problem is worst in the US, Latin America, and Asia Pacific, where registry data is weakest or hardest to access. For banks and fintechs, that gap is a serious compliance risk. A missed UBO can mean unknowingly doing business with a sanctioned individual or criminal network.
Trulioo's UBO Discovery Agent does not rely on a single registry. According to Financial Post, it uses governed AI to map ownership across jurisdictions and fragmented sources — stitching together data points that no single database holds. The result is a more complete picture of who actually controls a business.
The agent is built to handle "long-tail" businesses — smaller companies that rarely appear in major databases. Leader Post reported that the agent reconstructs ownership for hard-to-reach jurisdictions while keeping results auditable for regulators. In other words, it does not just guess — it shows its work.
The numbers from early deployments are striking. According to Sudbury Star, the UBO Discovery Agent has significantly increased UBO coverage for customers who previously relied on registries alone. In some markets, that gain is as high as 80 percentage points. In the hardest markets, coverage has crossed the 90 percent threshold.
That kind of lift matters for risk teams under pressure to know their customers. The agent delivers results without requiring a new vendor relationship or extra headcount, Edmonton Sun reported. Compliance teams get more coverage at no added operational cost.
AI tools in compliance face one big hurdle: regulators need to see how a conclusion was reached, not just what it was. Trulioo says the UBO Discovery Agent is built to deliver results that regulators can trust. According to Northern News, the agent uses governed AI — meaning its outputs are traceable and defensible under scrutiny.
That design choice sets it apart from black-box AI tools. Financial institutions can use the agent's findings in filings and audits without fear of being asked to explain a result they cannot back up. For compliance officers, that auditability is just as important as the coverage gains themselves.
