How runway safety systems protect major airports from dangerous overruns and crashes

The recent crash involving the Amazon cargo jet that killed five people has raised questions about Miami International Airport not being equipped with a safety system called the Engineering Material Arresting System (EMAS). The system is designed to prevent planes from veering off or overrun the runway, and has saved nearly 500 crew members and passengers at U.S. airports. While EMAS can be installed at six Florida airports, it is not installed at Orlando and Miami international airports. The National Transportation Safety Board will make safety recommendations at the conclusion of its investigation.
