MDA Space Will Acquire Blue Canyon Technologies for $620 Million in Strategic Move

MDA Space has signed a deal to buy Blue Canyon Technologies (BCT) from RTX for US$620 million in cash, the company announced on June 19, 2026 PR Newswire. The all-cash transaction adds over US$3.5 billion to MDA's opportunity pipeline and is expected to close in the second half of 2026, pending regulatory approval Street Insider.
BCT, founded in Boulder, Colorado in 2008, makes small spacecraft and satellite components. It has launched more than 85 spacecraft and has over 3,500 products currently in orbit PR Newswire. MDA CEO Mike Greenley said the deal would "accelerate our growth strategy by increasing our U.S. market opportunities" Market Screener.
RTX, formerly Raytheon Technologies, bought BCT in December 2020 for roughly US$350 million net of tax benefits. RTX originally wanted BCT to chase large prime satellite contracts from the U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA). But analysts say RTX found it more profitable to focus on high-margin defense systems than to build full satellites PR Newswire.
By selling BCT to MDA, RTX exits the satellite manufacturing business while keeping its focus on components and defense systems. MDA is paying US$874 million Canadian dollars — a 77% premium over what RTX originally paid Market Screener. The deal is expected to boost MDA's Adjusted EBITDA and earnings per share by 2027 Street Insider.
MDA is a Canadian company. To win sensitive U.S. government contracts, it needs a physical U.S. manufacturing base. BCT gives it exactly that — two facilities in the Denver and Boulder area and more than 400 skilled American employees PR Newswire. MDA listed on the New York Stock Exchange in March 2026, signaling its push into U.S. capital markets.
BCT has strong ties to NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and DARPA. MDA plans to channel that access through its U.S. defense subsidiary, 49North. BCT's small satellite expertise also complements MDA's "AURORA" line of software-defined satellites, which targets large low-Earth orbit (LEO) constellations Market Screener.
Because MDA is Canadian, the deal must pass a national security review by CFIUS — the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. Canada is a "Five Eyes" intelligence ally, which analysts say makes approval more likely than for buyers from other countries. Still, experts expect conditions like special oversight agreements on data and board access Street Insider.
MDA expects to fund the purchase with senior secured debt. The company says it will keep its net debt between 1.5x and 2.5x EBITDA after closing Market Screener. Jefferies analyst Sheila Kahyaoglu kept a "Buy" rating on MDA, saying BCT adds roughly US$3.5 billion to the company's pipeline of potential contracts PR Newswire.
Not everyone is cheering. Some analysts argue that even a close ally like Canada faces a "high aversion" from U.S. buyers when it comes to sensitive tenders. MDA has also dealt with setbacks before — it lost a major contract with EchoStar in 2025, rattling some investors Street Insider.
Others frame the deal differently: RTX may simply be shedding a lower-margin unit that no longer fit its strategy, leaving MDA to carry a heavier manufacturing burden. MDA's stock has risen more than 100% year-to-date in 2026, but investors will be watching closely to see whether BCT's U.S. defense ties translate into real contract wins Market Screener.
