Customers Bank and ElevenLabs Partner to Launch AI-Powered Agents for Enhanced Service

Customers Bank has partnered with ElevenLabs to roll out AI-powered voice agents across its customer service and internal operations, the nearly $26 billion bank announced on June 2, 2026. The move is part of an aggressive push to become what CEO Sam Sidhu calls an "AI-native" bank — one where artificial intelligence handles routine work so human bankers can focus on complex client needs, according to Business Wire.
The announcement came just weeks after the bank struck a separate multi-year deal with OpenAI and days after Sidhu made headlines by opening his Q1 earnings call with an AI voice clone of himself. Sidhu said, "AI represents the biggest opportunity in a generation for a bank of our size and culture," according to StreetInsider.
Customers Bank's AI journey began quietly in late 2022, when its top executives formed a private social media group to study generative AI right after ChatGPT launched, according to ICBA. By early 2024, the bank had trained 99% of its employees on AI tools and risk management. Today, 75% of staff use AI licenses every day.
The pace picked up fast in 2026. On April 27, the bank announced an onsite collaboration with OpenAI to re-engineer commercial banking workflows, according to Quartz. Then, on April 28, Sidhu opened his earnings call with an AI voice clone of himself — a live demo that stunned Wall Street analysts. KBW Managing Director Kelly Motta said she was in "shock" but praised the bank for being at the "forefront of this transformation," according to Philadelphia Inquirer.
ElevenLabs, a London-based voice AI company, will deploy what it calls "ElevenAgents" inside the bank's customer-facing and internal channels. ElevenLabs cofounder Mati Staniszewski said the system will deliver "human-like interactions at scale" while keeping the bank's signature personal touch, according to Investing.com.
The targets are specific and ambitious. Complex commercial account opening times are set to drop from over 24 hours to under 20 minutes, according to Banking Dive. Commercial loan closing times — including underwriting and legal review — are targeted to fall from 30–45 days down to just 7 days. The bank also aims to cut its efficiency ratio from 49% to the low 40s by end of 2026. Rivals Revolut and Klarna have already used ElevenLabs agents, with Revolut reporting an eightfold reduction in response times, according to FinTech Magazine.
Not everyone sees AI voice agents as a clean win. In May 2026, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency released its Semiannual Risk Perspective. It backed a "measured approach" to AI but warned of a "dual-edged" risk — better service on one side, higher cybersecurity exposure on the other, according to Consumer Finance Insights.
The CFPB has separately warned that chatbots can trap customers in "doom loops" — automated dead ends where no help ever arrives. AI voice technology also opens a new fraud door: criminals can use deepfakes to fool voice verification systems. Senator Sherrod Brown has called for strict human accountability in financial AI, warning it could be used to "swindle Americans out of their savings," according to the Senate Banking Committee.
Customers Bank has an unusually high Net Promoter Score of 81, compared to the industry average of 41, according to StreetInsider. The bank runs a "Single Point of Contact" model where every client has a dedicated banker. Leaders say AI agents will handle repetitive volume so those bankers can spend more time on relationships.
The bank insists no mass layoffs are planned. Instead, employees are being moved into roles as "managers of AI agents," according to Philadelphia Inquirer. The bank's stock has climbed 46% over the past year and trades near its 52-week high of $82.56, signaling that investors so far are buying the AI-native bet, according to Investing.com.
