Strong Geomagnetic Storm Forecast: Northern Lights Expected Across Canada Tonight and into June 5.

A powerful geomagnetic storm is set to hit Earth on June 4, with aurora borealis visible across all of Canada and as far south as Illinois and Oregon tonight, according to NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center. Three coronal mass ejections — giant blasts of solar plasma — have merged into a single "cannibal" CME traveling from the Sun at thousands of kilometres per second, Live Science reports.
NOAA rates the storm at G3 ("strong") with a high probability — between 45% and 79% — of escalating to G4 ("severe"), SpaceWeather.com says. The CME is expected to arrive mid-afternoon EDT on June 4, with storming likely continuing into the overnight hours of June 5.
The storm traces back to Sunspot Region 4455, an unstable "anti-Hale" sunspot — meaning its magnetic poles are reversed compared to normal sunspots, making it prone to violent eruptions, according to SpaceWeather.com. On June 3 at 7:28 a.m. EDT, the Sun fired an X1.0 solar flare, the strongest class possible, per NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory. That blast overtook a slower CME already heading toward Earth, merging into one amplified "cannibal" CME.
This event falls during the peak of Solar Cycle 25, an 11-year cycle of solar activity expected to crest in 2025–2026, NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center notes. NOAA service coordinator Shawn Dahl has warned that "a power blackout could occur with future storms of this or stronger magnitude," according to Space.com.
Not all Canadians will get an equal show. The Atlantic provinces and parts of Quebec have the clearest skies forecast for tonight, The Weather Network reports. The Prairies and West Coast face a "wild card" — a 30% chance of showers and heavy cloud cover that could block the display entirely. Alberta aurora chaser Chris Ratzlaff put the odds of a "Full Sky Alberta Aurora" at just 51%, and warned that a Kp-index of 6 or higher is needed for viewing from rural southern Alberta, according to DiscoverAirdrie.com.
Photographers face an extra hurdle: the moon is 82% illuminated tonight, Forbes notes. That bright moonlight will wash out fainter auroras, meaning the display may disappoint viewers expecting the vivid colours seen during the May 2024 "Mother's Day" storm. To see the lights, face north, get away from city lights, and let your eyes adjust for 20 minutes. Meteorologist Amandeep Purewal of The Weather Network cautions that "active weather and cloud cover may get in the way" for much of western Canada.
The storm is not just a light show. A G3–G4 storm can disrupt satellite navigation, knock out high-frequency (HF) radio used by aircraft, and push harmful electric currents through power grids and pipelines, NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center warns. During the comparable May 2024 storm, GPS disruptions caused an estimated $500 million in losses in the U.S. agricultural sector alone, as precision farming equipment failed, according to a StormWall study cited by CBC News.
Power grid operators and satellite companies are already in "active mitigation" mode, placing systems into safe states to prevent geomagnetically induced currents — the same force that knocked out Quebec's power grid in 1989, NESDIS reports. Trans-polar flights may face HF radio blackouts for hours. GPS accuracy could be degraded across the Prairies, affecting farm equipment, DTN Progressive Farmer warns.
NOAA's best estimate puts the CME shock front arriving mid-afternoon EDT on June 4, but there is real uncertainty — the storm could arrive up to eight hours later, pushing peak aurora into the early hours of June 5, CBC News says. Under G4 conditions, the aurora could dip as far south as Alabama and northern California in the U.S., and should be visible across all of Canada where skies are clear, per NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.
Storm-level G3 activity is expected to persist through most of June 5, Forbes reports.
