NASA Announces Artemis III Astronauts for Next Moon and Mars Exploration Mission

NASA is days away from naming the four astronauts who will fly the Artemis III mission — but the mission itself looks very different than originally planned. In February 2026, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman scrapped the lunar landing goal and turned Artemis III into a Low Earth Orbit test flight, according to The Guardian. The crew announcement is set for June 9, 2026, at Johnson Space Center, with a launch targeted for late 2027.
The pivot is the biggest shake-up yet for a program that has already cost an estimated $93 billion since 2012, according to Wikipedia. The actual lunar landing is now pushed to Artemis IV, targeted for early 2028 — more than half a century after Apollo 17 last touched the moon in 1972.
Isaacman announced the "radical" restructuring on February 27, 2026, The Guardian reported. Instead of landing on the moon, Artemis III will now orbit Earth at about 460 km altitude. NASA is comparing it to Apollo 9, which tested lunar module docking in Earth orbit before Apollo 11 attempted its landing. The goal is to test risky new hardware before committing to a moon landing.
The mission will test docking between NASA's Orion spacecraft and commercial systems, including SpaceX's Starship lander. Astronauts will also wear Axiom Space's new AxEMU spacesuits for the first time, according to Spaceflight Now. NASA's Jeremy Parsons called Artemis III "one of the most highly complex missions NASA has undertaken," citing the number of partners and systems being integrated at once.
The main reason for the scope change: SpaceX and Blue Origin fell behind on their lunar landers. SpaceX's Starship Human Landing System, which was always central to a moon touchdown, has faced repeated delays, according to Reuters. Rather than wait and risk another schedule slip, NASA chose to fly a safer mission in Earth orbit first.
To preserve hardware for the actual lunar landing, the Artemis III SLS rocket will launch with a non-propulsive "spacer" instead of the final Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage, according to SatNews. That stage will be saved for Artemis IV. Analysts at Space.com have called the 2028 landing target "optimistic," warning it could slip further if Starship testing stalls.
The restructuring comes as NASA faces steep budget pressure. The White House proposed cutting NASA's total budget by 23% in FY2027 — from $24.4 billion down to $18.8 billion — with NASA's science programs facing cuts of up to 47%, according to The Guardian. Scientist Bill Nye publicly called the science cuts "tone-deaf," CBS News reported.
The agency has also lost roughly 4,000 civil servants — about 20% of its workforce — through budget realignments and staff cuts in 2025 and 2026, according to the Washington Post. NASA launched a "NASA Force" hiring initiative in April 2026 to bring in private sector tech workers on 2-year contracts, signaling a shift away from long-term civil servant roles.
Moving the moon landing to Artemis IV in early 2028 raises the stakes of the U.S.-China space race. If the 2028 window slips, Chinese taikonauts could become the first humans to return to the lunar surface in the new era. Isaacman has pushed for "urgency and extreme focus" to prevent that outcome, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Congress remains split on the path forward. Rep. Brian Babin of Texas said he is "bullish" on Artemis but has raised concerns about broader science cuts. Rep. Zoe Lofgren warned that gutting research funding to pay for human spaceflight "loses the innovation that fuels our economy." Meanwhile, the European Space Agency continues to build Orion's Service Module and says the 3-to-4-week mission duration remains a rigorous test — whatever the destination, according to ESA.
