A catenary failure brought all train traffic between Galicia and Madrid to a halt on Wednesday morning, July 2, stranding thousands of passengers across the corridor. The outage began when a maintenance inspection locomotive became tangled in the overhead contact wires between the Porta de Galicia station in A Gudiña, Ourense, and Puebla de Sanabria in Zamora. A so-called "exploratory machine" — a specialized locomotive sent ahead of commercial trains to clear debris and check for ice — became entangled in the catenary wires at around 6:45 AM, causing a complete loss of electrical tension. The system worked as designed by catching the fault early, but the machine itself triggered the crisis, according to Diario de Mallorca.
Rail analysts say the A Gudiña-Zamora corridor is especially vulnerable. Extreme temperature swings in that mountainous zone can cause the overhead wires to sag or lose tension. Experts suggest the entanglement points either to a mechanical fault in the locomotive's pantograph — the arm that connects the train to the wire — or to a wire that had already sagged dangerously before the machine arrived, according to El Periódico de Extremadura.
Renfe Deploys Bus Bridge as Delays Stretch Past Three Hours
By 8:50 AM, Renfe had launched its "Plan Alternativo de Transporte." An estimated 15 to 20 coaches began shuttling passengers between A Gudiña and Zamora stations. All AVE and Alvia high-speed services linking Madrid with Santiago de Compostela, Lugo, and Vigo suffered severe delays, according to Diario de Ibiza.
Under Renfe's punctuality policy, delays over 30 minutes trigger a 50% refund and delays over 60 minutes trigger a 100% refund. With some morning services delayed by more than three hours, the state operator faces a full revenue loss on those tickets. Between 2,500 and 4,000 passengers are expected to be affected if the outage lasts the full day, according to La Opinión de Málaga.

The high-speed link between Madrid and Galicia opened in December 2021 after 12 years of construction delays. The Zamora-Ourense section has been its weakest point since day one, running through rugged terrain with single-track tunnels that leave little room for error. The introduction of the Talgo S-106 Avril trains in May 2024 — designed for variable track gauges — added further instability, with repeated technical stoppages throughout 2024 and 2025, according to La Provincia.
The political blame game runs parallel to every incident. The Galician regional government has labeled recurring failures "intolerable," while the national Ministry of Transport frames them as unavoidable friction during a period of record infrastructure investment. As of midday on July 2, Adif had given no estimated time for service restoration, leaving open the possibility that the disruption could extend into Thursday, July 3, according to La Opinión de Murcia.
