Francesco Bagnaia delivered a flawless performance at the 2024 Dutch TT, winning the main race to complete a perfect weekend at Assen. The Ducati Lenovo rider claimed pole position, the Sprint race, the Grand Prix, and the fastest lap — all in a single weekend at the legendary Circuit van Drenthe.
The victory cut the World Championship gap to just 10 points, with Jorge Martín holding 200 points to Bagnaia's 190. Meanwhile, a tire pressure violation demoted Marc Márquez from 4th to 10th, adding controversy to an already dramatic Sunday.
Bagnaia Sets Records and Rewrites History at Assen
Bagnaia set an all-time lap record of 1:30.540 during Saturday qualifying — the fastest lap ever driven at the circuit. On Sunday, he led all 26 laps and crossed the line 3.676 seconds ahead of Martín. He became the first rider since Mick Doohan in 1998 to win three consecutive Dutch TTs.
"I enjoyed everything," Bagnaia said after the race. "When you have this feeling with the bike, everything is easier. We were fast from the first lap on Friday." Analyst Neil Hodgson called it "a masterclass," noting Bagnaia's unique engine braking setup gave him extra corner speed in key sections of the track.
Márquez Penalized 16 Seconds for Tire Pressure Breach
Marc Márquez finished 4th on track but was handed a 16-second penalty after post-race inspections found his tire pressure was 0.01 bar below the minimum allowed. The penalty dropped him to 10th place in the final standings.
"It's a shame," Márquez said. "We were only 0.01 bar under for a fraction of the race, but the rules are the rules." The incident has reignited a paddock debate about the sensitivity of Michelin's tire pressure sensors and whether the rules are too strict.
Martín Limits Damage Despite Grid Penalty Weekend
Jorge Martín started three places further back than he earned, after stewards penalized him for impeding Raul Fernandez in qualifying. Despite that, the Prima Pramac Racing rider fought back to finish second and stay top of the championship.
"It was a tough weekend starting from the penalty," Martín said. "Pecco was on another level today, but I am happy with the consistency." Enea Bastianini rounded out the podium in third, climbing from 10th on the grid with a series of late overtakes.
Ducati Rules Assen as Championship Heads to Germany
Over 105,000 fans packed the Assen circuit on Sunday. Ducati has now won every 2024 race except the Americas GP. Honda and Yamaha continue to struggle at the back of the grid, with no wins between them all season.
The next round is at the Sachsenring in Germany, where just 10 points separate Martín and Bagnaia. The "silly season" drama continues off-track too — Bagnaia will be joined at the factory Ducati team by Márquez in 2025, while Martín moves to Aprilia and Bastianini heads to KTM.
