Bell's $25 Million Investment Powers Canada's FIFA World Cup 2026™ with Record Data Traffic

Bell carried more than 250 TB of wireless data across Canadian stadiums and venues during FIFA World Cup 2026™, making it one of the largest connectivity operations in Canadian history, according to Montreal Gazette. When fan zones in Toronto and Vancouver are added, the total climbs to 330 TB — the equivalent of streaming roughly 100,000 hours of 4K video.
The telecom giant spent over $25 million upgrading its network ahead of the 13 matches hosted in Canada, Whitecourt Star reported. The investment powered Bell's 5G+ Advanced network — its fastest wireless technology — across two of the country's biggest cities.
Bell made sweeping changes to its network before the tournament began. The company nearly tripled wireless capacity at Toronto Stadium alone, according to Fort McMurray Today. It also upgraded more than 45 network sites across key venues and fan zones in both Toronto and Vancouver.
To handle surging crowds outside stadiums, Bell deployed four Cells on Wheels — portable mobile towers that can be driven to any location and switched on quickly. These units filled coverage gaps at busy outdoor fan zones where permanent towers could not reach.
The 250 TB figure only tells part of the story. Toronto and Vancouver each set up official Fan Zones run by their municipalities, where fans without tickets watched matches on large screens. Those zones added another 80 TB of data on their own, Montreal Gazette reported.
That extra 80 TB pushed the total to 330 TB across the full tournament footprint. The fan zone traffic shows how much data modern crowds consume even away from the main venues — every photo, video, and social post adds up fast.
Bell's wireless network runs on top of a fibre optic backbone — underground cables that carry huge amounts of data at very high speeds. That fibre layer is what allowed Bell's 5G+ Advanced network to stay stable under the pressure of tens of thousands of fans online at once, according to Fort McMurray Today.
5G+ Advanced is Bell's top-tier wireless tier, built for dense, high-demand events. The company calls it Canada's fastest and most advanced wireless network. Keeping it running reliably across two major cities during a global tournament at the same time is a significant technical challenge.
