Respond.io Raises $62.5M Series B to Expand AI Customer Conversation Platform Globally

Respond.io has closed a $62.5 million Series B funding round to push its AI-powered customer chat platform into North America and Europe. The round was led by Camber Partners, a New York City growth equity firm known for backing only a handful of capital-efficient software companies each year, according to Edmonton Sun.
The company already handles 2 billion messages per quarter for more than 10,000 businesses across 180 countries. It brings in $35 million in annual recurring revenue, growing 169% year-over-year, while maintaining a 30% profit margin — a rare combination in today's startup landscape.
Respond.io was founded in 2017 in Hong Kong by Gerardo Salandra, Iaroslav Kudritskiy, and Hassan Ahmed. It started as a simple chatbot builder for Facebook Messenger. Over the next few years, the company pivoted hard into unified business messaging — pulling WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Messenger, LINE, Telegram, WeChat, and web chat into a single platform, Toronto Sun reported.
In September 2022, the company raised a $7 million Series A led by Headline Asia. That gave it fuel to expand across Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Between 2024 and 2025, Respond.io shifted to an AI-first model, using large language models to automate sales and support workflows. That transition drove its explosive 169% growth rate, according to Fort McMurray Today.
Camber Partners Managing Partner Scott Sercu called Respond.io "a rarity in the current VC landscape" — a company that reached significant scale while keeping a 30% profit margin. In a market where investors have punished growth-at-all-costs startups, that efficiency is a major selling point, Mitchell Advocate reported.
CEO Gerardo Salandra said the shift is inevitable. "The era of the 'email-first' CRM is over," he said. "North American and European mid-market businesses are finally realizing that their customers live on WhatsApp and Instagram." The funding will help Respond.io hire 200+ people in the US and EU over the next 18 months, focused on sales and customer success roles.
Respond.io's success in Southeast Asia and the Middle East does not guarantee easy wins in the West. North American businesses still rely heavily on email and SMS. Analysts at The Information point out that iMessage remains a closed system for businesses — a major gap Respond.io cannot fill. Forrester Research analysts counter that the market is shifting from "systems of record" toward "systems of engagement," according to Cold Lake Sun.
Expanding into Europe adds another layer of complexity: GDPR compliance. Respond.io updated its data systems to let European clients store data inside EU borders — a step specifically required before the Series B could close. California's CCPA adds similar rules for US operations, Edmonton Examiner reported.
Critics warn that Respond.io is deeply dependent on Meta and ByteDance. If WhatsApp or TikTok changes its API pricing or rules — as Twitter did in 2023, cutting off many third-party apps — Respond.io's core business could be threatened overnight. The company sits on top of platforms it does not control, Woodstock Sentinel Review noted.
Privacy groups raise a different flag. Unifying a customer's WhatsApp, TikTok, and Instagram conversations into one CRM profile creates a detailed record of their behavior across platforms. Organizations like Privacy International have warned this kind of data aggregation can feel like, in their words, a "360-degree surveillance state for consumers." How Respond.io handles these concerns in regulated Western markets may define its expansion, according to Cold Lake Sun.
