Princess Anne Tours HD Hyundai, Boosting UK-Korea Maritime Shipbuilding Cooperation

HD Hyundai has collaborated with BAE Systems since 2013, with BAE supplying survival equipment for ship crews; the company is also building a Philippine Coast Guard offshore patrol vessel.
HD Hyundai's long-standing UK ties date back to founder Chung Ju-yung, who received the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1977 and even met Princess Anne in London in 1983.
Chung Ki-sun described the UK as not merely a partner but a 'special partner' that has been with HD Hyundai from the very beginning.
During her three-day Korea trip, Princess Anne visited HD Hyundai Heavy Industries as the sole private company on the itinerary.
Survitec has provided submarine life-saving equipment since 2013 and continues to supply survival gear for naval crews.
Princess Anne visited HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, making the company the only private stop on her three-day Korea trip, according to Korea JoongAng Daily. She was joined by her husband Sir Timothy Laurence and the British ambassador, touring construction sites and an engine plant as the UK pushes to rebuild its own shipbuilding industry.
HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun called the UK a 'special partner' that has been with the company 'from the very beginning,' Korea Herald reported. The visit reflects decades of ties between the two sides — and a shared interest in deepening them.
Anne toured HD Hyundai's shipbuilding and special-vessel construction sites, along with its engine plant, according to SE Daily. Executives briefed her on the company's capabilities and outlined plans to share technology and expertise with British shipbuilding and maritime industries. The UK government has been pushing hard to strengthen those sectors at home.
Korea JoongAng Daily reported that the visit is part of a broader British effort to forge closer industrial ties with South Korean shipbuilders. HD Hyundai is one of the world's largest shipbuilders, making it a key target for that kind of partnership.
During the visit, executives briefed Anne on HD Hyundai's ongoing work with British defense firms, Sports Chosun reported. Rolls-Royce has supplied its MT30 gas turbine — a powerful naval engine — for South Korean Navy frigates since 2012. HD Hyundai integrates those turbines into full propulsion packages for current and future frigate programs.
Survitec has provided submarine life-saving equipment since 2013 and continues to supply survival gear for naval crews, according to Korea Herald. BAE Systems has also collaborated with HD Hyundai since 2013, supplying survival equipment for ship crews. Together, these partnerships cover both propulsion and crew safety on South Korean naval vessels.
The UK–HD Hyundai relationship stretches back generations. Company founder Chung Ju-yung received the Commander of the Order of the British Empire — a CBE — in 1977. He even met Princess Anne in London in 1983, according to Korea JoongAng Daily. The current visit echoes that decades-old connection.
Chairman Chung Ki-sun, the founder's descendant, told Anne that the UK is 'not merely a partner' but a 'special partner,' Sports Chosun reported. That framing signals HD Hyundai sees the relationship as something worth building on — not just maintaining.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is not focused solely on South Korean defense work. The company is also building an offshore patrol vessel for the Philippine Coast Guard, SE Daily reported. That project shows the company is actively growing its international shipbuilding footprint.
For the UK, the appeal is clear. Britain wants access to world-class shipbuilding know-how. HD Hyundai wants deeper ties with a NATO ally and a major defense market. Anne's visit — the only private company stop on her Korea itinerary — suggests both sides are serious, according to Korea Herald.
