Samsung Plans to Integrate Hardware-Based Privacy Display Across All Galaxy S27 Models

Samsung reportedly canceled a plan to source the Galaxy S27 vanilla's displays from BOE, opting instead to use Samsung Display panels across the four S27 models.
Privacy Display relies on a dual-pixel architecture that splits the OLED into two pixel types—narrow-angle pixels that are on while privacy is active and wide-angle pixels that are blotted out—potentially impacting resolution, brightness and power consumption.
Industry projections show growing adoption: about 1 million Privacy Display-enabled phones shipped in 2025, with estimates rising to roughly 21 million this year and 29 million next year.
Beyond phones, other brands such as Xiaomi, Honor, Oppo and vivo are reportedly pursuing similar privacy features, and Huawei is said to be evaluating bringing Privacy Display to future foldables.
Samsung is bringing its anti-snooping Privacy Display technology to all four Galaxy S27 models — not just the Ultra — making it one of the biggest upgrades to the S27 lineup, according to The Elec. The feature, which debuted on the Galaxy S26 Ultra earlier this year, blocks the view of anyone looking at your screen from the side, no adhesive film required.
The expansion is being driven by a key supply chain decision. Samsung canceled plans to source displays for the base S27 from BOE, a Chinese panel maker, and will instead use Samsung Display panels across all four S27 models, Sammy Fans reported. That shift makes the hardware-based privacy feature possible for every phone in the lineup.
Samsung's Privacy Display uses a technology called Flex Magic Pixel, built directly into the OLED panel. It runs a dual-pixel system — wide-angle pixels for normal use and narrow-angle pixels that activate when privacy mode is on. When you flip the mode on, a layer called the Black Matrix physically blocks light from the sides, making your screen look black to anyone not directly in front of it, according to Digital Trends.
Traditional privacy films — the stick-on kind — cut screen brightness by 20 to 30 percent and often hurt color accuracy and touch sensitivity. Samsung's goal for the second-generation version in the S27 is to keep any brightness drop under 10 percent in privacy mode, Digital Trends reported. The first-generation panel on the S26 Ultra drew some complaints about slight resolution drops and higher power use.
Samsung had been in talks to use cheaper BOE panels for the vanilla Galaxy S27 — a move that would have saved roughly $5 per unit. BOE failed to meet Samsung's quality standards, and the deal fell apart by late June 2026, with Samsung Display stepping in to supply all four models instead, according to Sammy Fans.
The switch guarantees every S27 gets Privacy Display hardware, but it comes at a cost. Analysts warn Samsung may raise S27 prices by $50 to $100 across the lineup to cover the more expensive components, Android Headlines reported. The Galaxy S27 FE is not expected to get the feature, as Samsung has already sourced standard AMOLED panels for that model from a separate supplier to keep the price down.
Just about 1 million privacy-display phones shipped in 2025, when the feature was limited to the S26 Ultra. That number is projected to jump to 21 million units in 2026 and reach 29 million in 2027, according to market research firm Sigmaintell Consulting cited by The Elec. The numbers show how quickly screen privacy is becoming a mainstream feature rather than a premium gimmick.
Chinese brands are moving fast to keep up. Xiaomi is reportedly testing a software-based privacy mode through its HyperOS 4 update, while Honor is testing hardware-level panels aimed at matching Samsung's 2027 rollout. Huawei is said to be evaluating Privacy Display for future foldable devices, according to Digital Trends. Critics note software approaches only blur or dim screen edges rather than physically blocking light — making them less effective than Samsung's hardware solution.
Samsung reportedly plans to keep Flex Magic Pixel hardware exclusive to its own devices until at least the end of 2028, giving it a multi-year head start over rivals. Foldables are seen as the next logical step, since their large screens and public multitasking make them prime targets for shoulder-surfing. A foldable with Privacy Display could debut as early as late 2026, The Elec reported.
The global market for smartphone privacy films — the old stick-on kind — was worth $1.38 billion in 2025 and is projected to hit $3.32 billion by 2032. Samsung's bet is that built-in hardware can take a big slice of that demand away from accessories entirely. Whether the S27 delivers on that promise without a steep price hike will be the real test when the phones are revealed.
